AL '79 rx-7 motor swap done...finally running

OK, so I posted introducing myself a few weeks back when i was knee deep into my engine swap in my '79 (9/78 manufacture date on the stamp in the door), and i'm finally done and she is running. let me say that it has been an adventure to say the least (not to mention, a bit more costly than expected) but it's certainly been worth it. so i got a used motor from an '83, found out that was the year they changed flywheels and clutch disc diameter so i had to wait to get that flywheel and clutch, since i figured with all the work i want it to be as right as it can, as the original '79 flywheel is a bit heavier and smaller disc so less holding power. i finally got that figured out got the motor in and everything hooked up and then she wouldn't start, cranked and cranked and wanted to start but nothing. so i started with all the dianostics, checking for voltage at coil, checking for switching of primary ignition circuit, checked the timing about 6 times blah, blah, blah.....i was freaking stumped! so after realizing that i had basically nil on my compression gauge, i thought i had purchased a bunk *** motor. well thank god for rx7club.com and all of its savy rotor heads because turns out all i ended up doing was intravenous injection of MMO into my comatose motor and perform a little CPR (turning the crank by hand) while forcing in enough MMO till it was dripping from the header pipe (no exhaust installed at this point, only the header) at which time i decided she was full as she was gonna get with the mystery oil and i let her marinade for 24 hours and then did another treatment and let her sit for another 4 or so hours. when out and hand cranked her till no more MMO was coming out the pipe then cranked her over a bit with the started and the plugs out with some shop towels to absorb all the MMO blowing out. well then came the moment of truth, hooked back up the plugs and ign and started cranking the hell out of her, prolly about 2 mins of cranking and a few sprays of ether into the venturis and "BOOM, BOOM BABY!!!"... presto the neighbors hate me. half a quart of MMO smoke (which a half a quart of that **** makes a lot of smoke) and 120 decibles at idle and im lucky the cops didn't show up. so i feel like im part of the club, im definitly a rotory head now. i've got just a sidedraft weber setup (dcoe 45) with straight exhaust (header, resonator, and el cheapo fart can muffler...which is still louder than hell by the way) and man she pulls so good espceially once you hit 5 grand and open up those webers all the way...man all you fools with your stock late model mustang gts, lookout!!!! and all this still on the '79 breaker points ingnition system, amazing that it runs like it does....i imagine in the next few days when my MSD coils and 6al get here and i hook her up for direct fire it'll be running like a scalded dog then.....well just thought i would share this with everyone....just so you know i consider myself a decent mechanic and this three day project turned into a three week deal (mainly because of waiting for parts and my lack of knowledge of the mechanical difference in model years) but this has been my first experience with a rotory and it was a learning one but man it was worth it i love this little car......can't wait to get the body preped and painted. i will post some pics when i get my sis over with her camera to take some pics......and thanks to this forum for without it my rx-7 would probably still not be running!

Motor Swaps can be quite the challenge. Even when you cover all your basis, something is bound to be missed. Nice job though!

What's "MMO" though? Thats a term I haven't stumbled on.

Man, that would be a blast... My '79 has a blown 12A (well over 100K)... I am trying to figure out if I want to go stock again or what I want to do. She sure is fun, but you can't "light 'em up" much with a stock engine. I want to keep the same dynamics, but would like some more ponies. We'll see. Can't wait to see your pics!
