QC 4th car, 4th Mazda.. A dream come true

Hello from the great white north!

The Mazda enthusiast story
The first car I can remember riding in is my dad's B2002 pickup.
I learned to drive in my mom's 2nd Protege, a 1999 beige 1.6l manual without RPM... wich she sold to me eventually as my first car.
8 months later I bought a 2008.5 Mazda3. I was hooked. I got involved in managing a local Mazda3 forum at that point.. wich I still do for 10 years now.
Then I wanted more... so 2 years later I bought a 2010 Mazdaspeed3.
And last month, after 7 years of fun with that beast, I stumbled on an opportunity to buy my dream car.. A black 1992 FD3s with 95k km on the clock and stock engine! A nice clean start for a project. I'm still keeping the speed3 has there is too much investment in that car to sell it.

The beginning
So this is where my journey on this community will begin.
I've been reading here for the past couple of months... it's a freakin gold mine !
In the coming months, I'll be gathering info and preparing a plan for the engine rebuild this winter. I still need to settle on my goals for this car engine wise.

The lists
Current mods on the car :
- Power FC /w Commander
- Aluminium AST
- Coilovers
- What looks like a C-West front bumper?
- Kakimoto exhaust

Things to fix / install :
- Rebuild engine. Engine has coolant seal leak (and do some reliability mods while we are there)
- Possibily rebuild turbos, they leak oil.
- Interior trims repair and refinish
- RPM fix
- Install a radio
- Install & paint the extra passenger door that came with the car to replace damaged one
- Replace the front bumper mesh grills with new ones
- Possibly wrap the car until I get it repainted in the future
- LEDs conversion all around

Things done since the aquisition
- New oem headlight left cover
- New oem hood prop holder clip
- Deep cleaning
- Storage until next year lol

and The pics !

Welcome to the club N2o qc! Since you're no newbie to forums we're probably going to assume you know to search and read and then do it again lol. There's a toooooon of information on this forum and almost any question that comes to mind has probably been answered at least a few times. Don't let that discourage you though from posting by any means. Become involved, contribute, and you'll end up really liking this forum. Looks like you've got a great starter on your hands to build up on. A nice deep detail with some minor paint correction and that baby will shine like crazy too

You have any long term plans for it yet? Or just gonna take it as it comes.

Thanks !
Yes, i know how to search... it's my #1 tool everyday at work lol And I love to use lmgtfy.com to respond to people that don't know how to search lol
The clear on the paint is pretty ruff in some spots.. looks like it had been parked under a tree at some point. And the hood is baked lol
That's why I want to wrap it to "hide" those. When I have the money for a full repaint of the original black by a reputable shop, the wrap will come off.
But I have to fix that doritos sandwich first.
I don't see myself chasing power with this car. Will see how it goes but non-sequential should be good for 300whp I was told... so I,ll probably stick to that.

Welcome and congratulations! The FD sure is a wild and at times unpredictable ride. Your name is so familiar, were you on the Mazda3Forums or MSF.org? I'm coming from a Mazdaspeed6 and Mazdaspeed3 as well.

Yes, both of them.
I also administrate Mazda3quebec.com. Your name is also familiar. Do you drive a montego blue FD and attended mt washington mazda climb in 2016 or 2015?

Nice! I haven't been on M3F or MSF in quite a while since I sold my Speeds. But yes, I have the Montego Blue FD. I was at Mt. Washington in 2015 a few months after I got it, but unfortunately have not had the time to go back since. I'm hoping once the FD is done (undergoing an engine rebuild ATM) and tuned I can take it up to Mt. Washington again.

Maybe next year if the FD is in good shape!

Yeah, I haven't had a chance to go since that year with the FD. My group is talking about going sometime next spring for a small get together. 😊

Welcome! Congrats on finding your dream car, it looks awesome! You're in luck since the fd community seems a bit more active, in the parts for sale sections anyway. This is definitely a gold mine of knowledge and parts. There's a bunch of good rx7 quebec and ontario facebook pages too.

Yeah non sequential should be able to get a nice reliable 300whp. More with the right supporting mods. you could also go BNR if you really wanna stick with the twins, although there are some really good turbo's out nowadays that boost very early and have a nice long powerband. Mainly Garret GTX variants and BW EFR twinscrolls. Both can have boost as early as 3-3500 and maintain it till 8500 or more with the right setup. Plus they'll simplify things and get rid of some heat problems.

As far as the paint it doesn't look that bad from the pictures you posted. I see some fading spots on the hood. But I think those could be fixed with a good detail, followed by some 3000 and 5000 grit wet sanding in the trouble spots. Then buff it out with some Zaino PC or your preferred abrasive swirl remover and finish it off with a nice wax of your choosing. Should do the trick to bring that depth and shine right back without having to shell out for a wrap job.

After some lecture, I found out I didnt need a downpipe since I have a JDM.
One thing i'm not sure is if I have the so much sought after "eFini Y-Pipe" since my car "is" an eFini rx7? Edit: NVM, I found my answer here : https://robrobinette.com/efini.htm
Aside from that, i'm still trying to wrap my head around wich mods I need if I go non-sequential. I assume I would go with a midpipe to be able to remove a lot of emission stuff (airpump, egr, etc..) to clean up the engine bay. Still not sure if a radiator, intake & intercooler are needed.

For the paint, it's pretty ruff in some spots... you can feel the "holes" in the clear when you pass your hand or microfiber over it. My detail guy that work at Porsche told me that it needs paint.
But yeah, it's not my 1st priority. I want the car to run next spring first lol
