It all depends about what you care about. If it's all about a good looking car with breathtaking performance in the twisties the FD is tough to beat. If you want some creature comforts and a rattle and squeak free interior the FD is not for you.

As fair as reliability an ls1 swap can get you around 400 rwhp in a fairly stable package, but I just blew one up from oil starvation so what do I know? Rotaries can be reliable but it's a crap shoot.

The fact of the matter is that power and reliability are generally inversely proportional in these cars however you do it unless you have a stupid amount of money to put in.

...but if you had a stupid amount of money you probably wouldn't be asking the question, now would you.

you can't make 350hp reliably in these cars. There are things you can do to help them last longer, but sooner than later they all die.

If you want to make 500-600whp, you're going to need a Japanese I6 or an American V8 to do it reliably.

Unless they got 600+ hp Supras, to run with them 400+ is all you need. And done right it can be very reliable.

So your friends all drive these around and you want to know how they compare to a FD?

and no you can not have a reliable 500-600hp rx7 unless it is a LSX swaped car.

500-600 horsepower out of an rx7 is not gonna be reliable , you didnt even state which series rx7. just gut your car get rid of emissions pwr steering/ ac and your car will weigh like 2600 pounds therefore making your 350horsepowr car be like a 500 horsepower supra

there is a whole LOT to learn about the 3Gen rx7. If you want 500+HP get ready to spend a good $20K in parts, engine, tranny, powertrain, wide wheels/tires, suspension, turbo, fuel, etc etc etc. ohh and the biggest thing you want to be aware of is that with hose power levels in a rotary the powerband will not be like that of a supra. unless you build your engine/turbo combo specifically for low-end response you will have a VERY diffrent power curve. ALL top end and at those power levels the car will be absolutly frightening.

if you truely need 500-600hp then i would go with an ls swap

if you need 300-400hp the rotory will do

now im not saying you cant make 500-600 with a rotory
it is just much easier with the V8
and will more than likely last longer

good luck

500-600 in a 13b-rew is doable, but not reliable as a DD. Reliable as a weekend warrior? yes. To run 500-600whp out of a FD you're looking at running either race gas or some sort of AI. Read the FAQ's as this is covered ALL the time.

I liked these cars growing up but never wanted to mess w/ the rotary.
Now I have one and enjoy it, but even if you were to go v8, it's not cheap and everything is a custom deal.

Thumbs up so worth it

I agree. I own a 93 touring. Over 5 years now. I have never driven anything else like this. Power delivery and handling is unmatched. For those who have never gotten the chance, they are missing out. I dont think there will ever be a car that will be built to satisfy like an FD.

what're your goals? not performance wise (hp), but are you going to be tracking it or drag racing or autocross or what?
reliable at 500+ hp is not easy, or likely. However 400hp is more than enough for most people, still decently reliable, and easily streetable, 500 hp is barely streetable in such a light car.
search the forums and you will find the info you are looking for.

that would probably be mistake #1. read the FAQs in the 3rd gen section. then read them again. you shouldn't need to ask too many questions after that.
