They will both cost you a good penny. My LS swap in the FD cost me around $11k and the 2JZ in my 4Runner ran me about $8k. Even cutting corners and buying used parts your looking at about $8k each.

Before I started my ls swap I was wanting to do the 2j swap. After looking at prices of the 2j and 1j I decided I was gonna save money on going the ls route. If you want to go manual trans route I think the t-56 and r-154 are roughly the same price. I’d go with what you like best though. Looking back now I wish I went the jz route.

It all depends on what HP level he wants but the costs can be made to where he can come out cheaper if he just wants a low HP car. All in all, i feel both V8 and 1jz route can get pretty pricey.

Swaps are pricey.
For both the LS and JZ route, the main issue is a good transmission. NA jz's and 4.8/5.3 LS motors are both easy to come by in the US, but a used T56 can almost never be found sub-$1000, and a rebuild can easily hit the $2000 mark. Your other options are a ~$3200 T56 magnum, a weak T5 from a Camaro, or adapting another tranmission wherein the price of adapters/flywheels can hit the $1000 mark. The same story stands for the JZ, the W54 is weak, and an R154 or adapted AR-5/CD009/etc gets expensive quick.
If you're ok with an automatic, the LS becomes a bit cheaper.
