1988 RX-7 GXL Owned for 15 years

Hello all!
Been a long time google searcher of this site and finally decided to join.

Bought my first car 15 years ago when I was 18 years old, and it was a 1988 RX-7 GXL. I have kept this car for 15 years, gradually putting money into it as life happens, but now I’m to a point where I have a good paying job and can afford to throw all I can into the car. I gradually taught myself about rotaries over the years since mechanics were far and few and pretty much know a whole lot about the car itself. I do most of the work myself. I’ve learned that you have to have patience with these cars. I’m glad I didn’t give up on it!

Still needs a new paint job.

Where most of the money has got into. Just about replaced everything under hood, from oxygen sensors, air flow meters, pulsation damper, FP regulator to solenoid valves and thermo sensors.

Welcome to the forum! Glad to hear that you've kept the car for so long. It appears to be in nice shape despite needing paint. Does the car have a lot of miles on it?

The car has 181,140 miles on it. When I bought it though, it had about 147,000 miles on it. The kicker is that when I bought it, the first owner had the engine rebuilt by RX7 Heaven in TN at around 117,000 miles, so engine itself doesn’t have a whole lot of miles. I still have the receipt from it. The previous owner that I bought it from didn’t take a whole lot of care of the car. Oil was black, spark plugs were worn out, leaks everywhere, barely could hold an idle. Over the years I’ve done things little by little when I could afford to, hence where it’s at in the condition it is in today.

It still needs a lot more work but the engine work it needs is minimal, it does need new suspension, all the bushings under the car need to be replaced, oil pan gasket leak, engine mounts need replacing and or upgrading, interior seats need to be reupholstered and plastic trim breaking everywhere and needs replacing. I did some injector work myself 8 months ago, replaced everything in fuel system, including the PD, the FPR and the solenoid for the fuel pressure. The paint was a cheap paint job I got when I was younger and when I could afford it, $600 paint job. I’m good with detailing vehicles so I restore the paint every 6 months or so, to Atleast let it last a while until I can afford to get a good worthy paint job, in the original sunrise red color. I’m a big Japan racing fan, loved the touge, drifting, and Wangan racing that was done back in the 90s. Naturally I grew up playing games like Gran Turismo, Tokyo Xtreme Racer, and Need For Speed, so this car was right up my alley when I bought it. Nice upgrade when going from a mountain bike as a vehicle to this car.
