IL 1979 rx7 GS/ HELP!!!

Hi guys,

I just bought the 7 on my profile pick and it has some problems that i would love some help with. First i has a softball size hole on the floor pan behind the dirvers seat. I was wondering if anyone knows where i can find some floor pans? I would rather replace it with a floor pan instead of some regular stuff.

Second problem is with the wiring. There is a short somewhere in the system. While i was charging the battery to turn the motor the wipers turn on and stay on, the interior light and the guage cluster lights dont turn on, and there was smoke coming off the alternator so i unplugged the plug on the back of it and it stopped smoking but the wipers where still waving. I would like to instead of trying to find where the load is to put in a new wiring harness. Does anyone know where i can find a new one?

By the way i got the gs cause i figured it would be the easier one to work with.

Thanks for your help.

first off welcome to the club. did u see the rust hole before u bought it? i would have passed on it. the alt might have an internal problem. as for the wipers, problem might be in the switch or the other part of the system that makes it stop when the wipers r at the bottom. check the faq's and dl the fsm for ur model. don't think u can buy floor pans unless u find a wrecked 7 to get one out of. may just have to weld in some sheet metal. but that hole will have to be cut out larger to get some good metal to weld too. i'd suggest looking for another body and using that one for parts. electrical issues r a pia to sort out.

congrats, I agree with rxtasy the floor pan would need to come out of a donor as well as a harness chances are the harness may not be easy to come by

I surgest you have a panel guy look at the rust to give his opinion. The electrical problem may be a simple one however again this maybe better to get advise from a electrical guy just to give you an idea of the extent of the issue

Thanks for your comments. The hole isnt that bad. the guy ran over the boulder he put at the end of the driveway and it tore off the lines and made the hole. Other than that there is no other rust on the car exept a 1/4'' hole where the moldings go on the passenger door. the paint is still shinny as new. I couldnt beleive the body is in such good condition specially the paint. Again if anyone knows of a vender that sells these items new i would appreciate it alot. Ive looked in catalogs like the ones from Victoria British LTD and Black Dragon but i did not see those things in their catalogs.

Hi guys i need some help,

when i first got the car and connected the battery; the motor started and it ran but i had no lights in the car that worked, no parking lights and the worse problem was that the wipers would stay on and the alternator was smoking so i unpluged the back connector and it stoped.

Now i took out some bogus radio that someone had shoved into the fuse box to power it, took out the factory radio, and replaced some fuses that where blown in the fuse box. Now i have parking lights, interior lights, dash lights up, the rear difroster light shows up when you hit the switch, the antenna motor works and the electronic rear glass release also works.

Problems:

1. I cant figure out why the headlights wont pop up. The motors look like they are new and i moved them by hand so they are not frozen. Also i visually checked the fusable links in the strut tower and they look ok. I should have checked them with a meter. I have 2 browns and a black. Can you guys let me know what to check on this please.

2. The wipers would not stop when i moved the switch back to stop but the wipers do go faster when you select it on the switch. I pulled the fuse to stop them. I was thinking that it was just the combo switch and i was just going to replace it. But i rather see if i can check it first just in case its not that. That way someone else that really needs it can get it. What can i do?

3. The dash warning lights dont light up. Many things are disconnected? Sould i pull the dash and check the bulbs or do i need another dash? Again if i dont have to replace it it would be good so the part stays out there for someone else.

I am new to vehicle wiring and to rx7's. Im usually a bimmer/honda guy. But loved rotaries since i was born.

I will greatly appreciate your help. Please dont be mean with your responses.

For the headlight problem from memory there is a relay that powers them. Trace the wiring from the motors. Is the relay connected ? Is there power being fed into the relay ?

for the headlights check the fusiable link on the D/S strut tower there are 3 there

dash lights and what not, first check your alt/reg situation 79 was the only year with an external voltage regulator. I would suspect either you have the wrong regulator or a previous owner did a swab for a alt with internal regulator as they are higher amperage units
