1979 RX-7 (6030 original miles)

Hello. My name is Craig. I recently purchased a 1979 Mazda RX7 (Mfg. Date 03/79) from the original owner. The special thing about this car is the fact that it only has 6030 original miles. I also have the owners manual and service records to back this up. I originally bought this car as a toy, but I'm finding it difficult to put any additional miles on it.
Thanks,
Craig

Wow! What condition was it in when you found it? Was it sitting up in the guy's garage covered in dust with bad gas and sitting on dry-rotted tires? That's like a museum piece if it's near mint.

1979 Mazda RX-7 GS - Pictures

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for all your responses. Attached are some pictures of my 1979 Mazda RX-7 GS (6030 original miles). I originally purchased it as a fun car, but because of the mileage, I don't really want to put any additional miles on it. I am planning on selling it to someone who would really appreciate this classic. I have the original owners manual and the service records documenting the mileage.

Please let me know what you think.

Craig

I think that this is an awesome piece of history and i myself would be interesed if i weren't going after a different 79 right now. I recommend that you try to use a local Mazda dealer to try to get in touch with Mazda corporate office to see if they would be interested in it as they have do have a few cars that they own

I have already contacted Mazda corporate directly. I spoke to their public relations department regarding my car. They mentioned that because of the current economy, they are not able to purchase any cars at this time. They said if it was a couple of years ago, they would have been able to. Hopefully I'll be able to sell this car to someone who will truely appreciate it. If anyone is interested, let me know.

got it for free... its pretty mint minus a dent in rear quarter, original owner parked it after hitting a tree in 1988. im gunna put a new quarter on it and probably sell it for a ton and buy another one where im not scared to modify it. i want to daily this one but i know its probably worth alot and know someone deserves it more than me and its not really fair to modify her and should be left stock

Sounds like you got a good deal. I am probably going to be selling my RX-7 as well. I originally purchased the car as a toy, but with 6030 miles I am finding it difficult to put any miles on it. I would rather sell it to someone that would really appreciate this low mileage classic.

I actually found the car on Craigslist. I purchased it from the original owner. He purchased the car in Texas in 1979. It was moved via car carrier to Ohio in 1984. I have the owners manual, a copy of the Ohio title from 1984 and all the service records documenting the mileage. The car is completely original down to the tires. I'm not exactly sure why the car was never driven, but I'm glad it wasn't.

That's quite the beauty! Getting in it must be like entering a time capsule from 79'.

Getting in it is just like entering a time capsule from 1979. It is a fun car to drive, but it doesn't quite handle like the newer cars. Maybe I'll hold on to it for a while.

Hmmmm

I hate to be the negative nancy here, but something smells kinda fishy.

Not many details, in what is basically a "for sale" thread. Also an interesting note is that the O.P. mentions the mileage in the title, as well as several more times in his posts but when he took pictures, he forgot to take a picure of the most interesting part of this car, the odometer?

Also, what kind of service records do you have for a car that barely has enough miles to have needed an oil change.

Its just kind of hard to believe that this car just pops up on craigslist. An original owner of this car know what it is and knows what its worth he wouldn't just throw it on craigslist. We'd have seen this car first on ebay or one of the other rotary sites.

I'd like to believe that this is legit and this closet classic actually exists but I would urge anyone who's interested in buying this car (which would be pretty much everyone on these boards) to exercize caution and not do anything dumb like panic and send this guy money, so that the car doesn't get away.

Remember the number 1 rule on the internet , if it sounds too good to be true then it probably isn't true.

My 1979 RX7 odometer shows the car has 05764 miles on it.

The 79's did not have a 100,000 mile digit on the odometer.

So does my car have 5764, 105764, or 205764 miles on it?

You can not tell from the odometer, but the appearance of the car should be appropriate for the mileage.

Good point about the digit on the odometer. One wear spot that my dad always told me to look at to tell if a car's odometer had flipped is the break pedal. It'll usually show the wear. Obviously there are alot of other places you could look though.

More, and more detailed, pictures would defintely be appreciated.

Documenting the engine compartment in detail would be of great value to we restorists... as well as possibly making your mileage claim a no-brainer for everyone. There are parts that show wear easily, and that are hard to find in the original brands today.

& I'd be very careful about moving it above a crawl on 30-year-old tires, regardless of the care with which they've been maintained. Rubber simply does not last that long.

Good cue, but not definitive. I have a complete set of pedal pads, still in the Mazda bags, in my spares box.

1979 RX-7 Additional Pics & Information

Here are a few additional pics I thought you might like to see. Because of the mileage, there are only 6 service records I received from the original owner.

3/1986 - 4141 Miles - Arm Recall
8/1999 - 5379 Miles - Tune Up / Top Off Brake Fluid / Oil Change
7/2001 - 5457 Miles - Replace Alternator & Voltage Regulator
10/2002 - 5800 Miles - Dead Battery - Slow Charged
9/2006 - 5830 - Rear Brakes Adjusted / Oil Change / Mazda Inspection
8/2008 - 5912 - Brakes locked up from sitting - fixed
Mazda Inspection / Oil Change

All of this work was performed by Cascade Auto Group in Cuyahoga Falls, OH.

the underside of the car should be the MOST evident of the lack of miles driven. very nice 7 btw.

if he's planning on selling it and knows there's intrest from the members of the forum,he's probably not going to tell you how much he paid. if he got a good deal on it he'll be set up for a better profit and i think he knows that.
