What speakers are superior...

... than the Infinity Reference speakers, within the same price range?

I am looking at the 6.5" Infinity Reference 6002i to put in the rear of my FC. It lists for $99 a pair. For that price, can anyone list some speakers that you consider are superior products in the same price range?

thanks

I was listening to them compared to the Sony Xplod's at Fry's not too long ago. The Sony's were $10 less, but the Infinity's sounded MUCH better. I think the Infinity's are pretty hard to beat in that price range.

There's no such thing as "superior". Sound being subjective, everyone has their own preferences. If you can, go to a local car audio store, audition as many speakers in the price range you can afford, and buy what *you* like.

yeah i went to the local Circuit City to listen at their speakers, and was very impressed with the Infinity Reference Speakers, head and shoulders above all the other offerings in the price range.

just want to see if anyone else have found other speakers where they feel is actually better than Infinitys

There are a lot of good speakers out there. Personally, I've owned the higher end gear (CDT Audio, Boston Acoustics, MB Quart, Diamond Hex) so I doubt I could recommend something in your budget. Still, out of what I've mentioned, I like the Quarts best, the others have their virtues notwithstanding. As far as car audio goes, buying by reputation or what other people recommend isn't always the best way to go about it. If you really like those Infinitys, get those.

I honestly feel that for the money Infinity has some of the best products.

I recently bought my entire system through them. I purchased their Kappa Perfect 12'' sub and Kappa Perfect components. They also just started making amps, I ordered their class D amp to power my sub. I listended to their low model stuff at my work(Circuit City), and thought it sounded pretty good. I figured if their low models sounded alright, the top of the line stuff must be pretty good. I'll tell you how it sounds after I finish my custom box.

Not to mention I got all the stuff for cost from the Infinity itself.

Hey I'm a college audiophile majoring in mechanical engineering with a few sound/acoustic classes. I don't like to crank up the bass to the point where it's all just a bunch of rattling noise like some of my friends. But do listen to music loud on occasion.
I'd recommend Alpine Type-S I've got those in my FC they're about $10 cheaper then Infinity Refrence.
My parents have Refrence in their car and I think the Type-S sound a little better. Could just be the acoustics on her '98 Olds Eighty Eight compared to the RX-7.
They're both great speakers though. The bass in the Alpines are a little better I think but if you get subs I'd recommend getting a low-pass filter so you don't blow them. I think the Alpine Type-S is a great speaker for the price.
NOTE: I installed them myself and couldn't get the grille to work right it kept hitting the two hatch holders. I finally wrapped a little bit of electrical tape around the contact points and they don't rattle anymore. If you had them professionally installed they might get it to work.

Another thing if you do get subs I'd wouldn't recommend going CRAZY on them. I've seen the FC blow out the back hatch glass twice. Just some words of caution. If you're gonna really CRANK IT UP park and open the hatch.

hahah don't worry about subs, this is a DRIVING car (aka track ***** and autox fiend), a sub would just be unwanted weight to me

just want some extra umph in the back to fill out the sound when i roll down the window/pull back the sunroof and let 'er rip

I'll check out the Alpine Type-S

I'll second the Alpine type-s speakers, one of the better speakers I've heard for < $100.

I wouldn't worry about your hatch glass if you did get subs, that's VERY hard to break that glass with bass if the glass was in good condition to begin with. I had $3000 worth of car audio (mostly bass) in my FC last weekend at a local sound-off, and took 4th with 146.4 decibles, and had no problem with the hatch glass, I'd really like to see one blow, because those numbers are not easy to hit.

never mind the bass breaking the hatch, how about the jackass who wants to break the window and steal your stuff.

Yeah that happened to me except my brother left the door unlocked when I let him borrow it while I was in Colorado for spring break. LOL funny thing was it was a cheap Jensen amp spent 40 bucks on the amp and 2 crappy subs. Have a $300 Alpine head unit Type-S front and rear ~$170 and they only took the $5 200 Watt Jensen amp.

As for the bass breaking the hatch they might have been cracked or something didn't really see them before to see what kind of shape the hatch was in. I've played some really good bass out of my 2 12" Type-S and 1000 W Pioneer amp and the hatch is still fine. Might of been a freak accident or something, still kinda neat to see. Still goes threw your mind after seeing it happen though.

That's why I just got done with my tinting project. And let me say, that hatch glass is NOT easy to tint, I have a whole new respect for the pros doing that right. It still doesn't look bad at all to me, and you can't see my system unless you're within a foot of the glass.

I hit my old rear screen with a crowbar - didn't even dent it!
