What to put below aftermarket stereo in FD?

I'm about ready to order my stuff to put the aftermarket stereo in my bose FD, however I havent been able to figure out something. Since the Bose is a double din ordeal, and nearly every aftermarket head unit these days is single din, what are people putting below the aftermarket headunit? Certainly I dont want an empty space there. Is there a cubby hole thing out there I can buy? I'd love to have a friendly place to put my cell phone

Also, pictures of what people have put there would be nice too

Lastly, is there an install kit, or will my aftermarket head unit bolt in easily without one?

Thanks!

You could buy the stock R1/Base DIN storage cubby. It looks very nice and has a slick door on it.

Or you could put some gauges below the stereo.

You can see the storage bin below. It's a stock Mazda part, very nicely made. I lined the inside of mine with leather, to keep stuff from rattling in the plastic bin. That's an Alpine unit in my car.

As far as an install kit, I recommend a plug-in cable to adapt to the existing wiring. Note that main power is on the centre amp plug, just above and behind the head unit on the right - the power on the Bose head unit is not the full 30A line. You will have to change the Bose speakers, or get an adapter to them. They are low impedance, and have amps. built in. Crutchfield is a good place to look for these adaptors.

I moved the cone shaped "locator" on the back of the stock Bose unit to the new Alpine. That secures the back of the new unit. The sides will lock in place as it's a standard DIN mount. There are no screws, it snaps in place and you need a tool to release it. You will have to fiddle a bit with the besel cover to get it in at a proper depth, but it's not a big problem. Took me 5 min. to figure that out.

a plate with gauge cluster in it, or cup holder! I believe all toyotas have the same din size as Mazda's, and they have single din cupholders. Did this on my 91 MR2, I think it would fit in the fd.

A cupholder would very likely interfere with the shifter. It's rather tight in this car.

Like everyone else said, get a stock DIN storage compartment. I just recently installed my Defi BF gauges and the Link Control II box is sitting inside it now. I used to have my sunglasses in it but since the Link Control is in there now...my sunglasses are SOL.

Here is a pic of the DIN storage compartment (closed) if you haven't seen one before. Also, this photo was taken right before I found a 60mm gauge plug for the third gauge slot.

Like everyone has said, just go with the OEM din storage compartment. It will make your dash look flush and it shouldnt be too expensive. Plus it gives you a place to store many random things.
