vintage red clear coat?

I was told by another forum member a while back that there is no clear coat on the vintage red FD's, and to be careful when waxing the car. I'm just having a hard time understanding why a 93' would not have a clear coat.

Just looking for some clarification. is there a clear coat or isn't there?
thanks in advance.

To my knowledge, no it doesnt. I think red, white, and black are all single stage. What did they mean by "be careful when you wax the car"? Single stage paint is still paint...Carnauba waxes will produce an even deeper wet look on single stage paint compared to a multi stage finish, but its no different than waxing a multi stage paint car.

My VR is code "NU" and it's definitely clear coat.

If anything, it's the clearcoats that need to be treated with more care, not the single stage paint.

93 VR is not clearcoated. To confirm, use a fine grit sand paper (1000) and lightly sand some unseen area on your car. If you see white powder comes off on your sand paper, it is clear coated.

No clearcoat on vintage red. The Mazda guys decided that the red paint looked better without the clearcoat so they left it off. I use Meguirs NXT and Meguirs #26. When people see my car the first thing they say is What kind of car is that? The next thing is What year is that, it shines like it's brand new. You definetly have to take better care of the red paint than the other colors.

Guys,

Dont forget the Touring package included an upgraded paint. I don't remember if its a clear coat or what, but I know the paint is better, and more durable.

I think my 93 VR has clearcoat - because I can see it peeling off the rear bumper

Aha!

I thought the tourings may have had it and the base or R1s did not. thanks kyle

Thanks Wade. As of today it is 10 FDs.

Anyway this is for 93's only, I have one 94 white 94 but I haven't tested to see if it has clear.

VR and BB Tourings DO have clear coat.

VR and BB R1's and base models don't have clear coat.

I'm pretty sure that R1s and Base models would be built on the same line, the only differences in the two cars are bolt-ons with the exception of the holes in the hatch for the spoiler, they could still be painted in the same line.

All the Montego Blue, Silver, CYM cars will have clear, clear is a matter of fact when the color is metallic.

Many repaints will have clear even if it is a R1 or Base. It is very easy to tell if your car has clear, wax a spot on the body, rub sorta hard. If there is a little color on the rag you applied the wax with then no clear. No color= clear coat. The mirrors on ALL the solid colors on all models don't have clear.

The paint is a different color for a VR R1 or Base vs a Touring.

Related question:

My car does indeed have single stage paint. (94 R2 VR code NU). Would I be better off getting it repainted with single stage again? Or is clear coat the better value for a repaint?

I thought the 94+ paint was multi-stage due to the fading and chipping issues with the 93 paint?

Ah, yes reading more closely I see that now.

Well, if you get the impression I'm dreading the price of a repaint, I am.

For now it's just bimonthly polishing with that Turtle Wax red polish. It actually works pretty well for badly faded paint. Not a show car finish, but the car looks normal again.

I can get you some good detailing products if you want, I'm friends with the owner of Extreme Solutions, he makes very good products.

I might still have some Exotic Cut and Cherry Polish if you want to try them before you get paint.

Also, there's a paint shop local to me called Dunn's on 272, I hear they do good jobs at a reasonable price. I'm also dreading the cost of a repaint, so I've been asking around.

Well detailing won't solve much because the roof and hood are worn through most of the color.

I have a BIL who does hotrod restoration bodywork who's doing some stuff in his garage on the side. I have a really good feeling I need to be in line for that.
