VDO Gauges at night

searched & there was tons of info on the gauges themselves...but no comments on night visibility OR pictures.

Does anyone have pics of VDO Vision gauges at night???
or can comment on them? (compared to stock gauge visibility)

I had their boost gauge. The backlighting while very easy to see was too bright (had it wired with the dimmer too) and was kinda ghetto like a bright *** light bulb was shining in your face. That's why I say I had one.

I have the VDO Vision boost and water temp gauges in my Tripower center speaker pod. I installed red bulbs (from the ricer section at Pep Boys) and the backlighting matches the stock gauges closely along with being very easy to read at night. They dim at the same rate as the dash so everything looks perfect. No issues.

I have two VDO gauges, and as is none really light up just the way I want... but read on.

My biggest problem is that the mechanical water temp gauge is grounded by the capillary tube so it doesn't dim. (there may be a way around this, but taking the a-pillar gauge mount on and off is more trouble and destructive than I care to undertake, both on the wiring side and light bulb change)

As for my boost gauge, it came with a small light bulb "condom" in order to get the orange lighting... problem is that the light condom is too opaque and lighting level diminishes too much.

In both cases, I read this in the past, the lighting problem(s) can be addressed by the use of collored bulbs of varying capacity/wattage.

Don't let the tone of this post divert your intent to purchasing VDO gauges. side the "tweakable" lighting situation, they really look right at home in an FD and this at a reasonable cost.

Cheers.
