Using 6 ohm speakers in FC vert headrest
I just purchased 4 sony 2 7/8" full range drivers to swap into my verts headrests. These are 6 ohm speakers which are rated for 100W in household applications. I haven't figured out exactly how I am going to configure them, but I listened to them hooked up to my Polk Audio sub / satellite setup replacing the Polk satellites. While they don't sound as good as the polks, I was quite impressed with the sound.
BTW the rest of the system is as follows. The fronts will be Infinity Kappa 60.7 6 1/2 separates (2 ohm) with 100W RMS into 2 ohms. I will also run a 12" Infinity Kappa Sub (4 ohm) with 200W RMS mono.
Question:
1. Will running speakers designed for AC in a DC application cause any problems? I think not, but I had a friend raise the question, and I hadn't even thought of it.
Possible configuration options:
A. Use the power on the aftermarket head unit to power these. This would be 22W RMS into 4 ohms, so probably around 15 RMS into 6 ohms. The speakers already have bass blockers installed on them, so filtering out lows would be taken care of that way.
B. Run these off the rear channel RCA outs to a separate 4 channel amp. Wire the speakers in parallel (get them to 3 ohms) and power them with 45W RMS and use the amps crossover to cross them over at 400hz and remove the inline bass blocker.
B would give more adjustability, but would cost more and I would need to place another amp and possibly be overpowered relative to the front speakers. A is cheaper and less wiring, but it may be tough to get the sound adjusted well.
