Upgrade my subs to what?

Right now I have 4 Kenwood 10's, in a custom box that was built for about 1000 watts. My friend gave me a deal so thats why I shatched it up. Im thinking about upgrading the subs but I'd like some suggestions. I have this feeling I can do alot better. Im running them all on a Kappa 202a.

I would say JL, Boston, Focal to name a few. Depends on what you are looking for in your sub department. Boomy? Tight? I am always in search for the perfect sub!!

Do you plan on using the same box? If so, how big is it (meaning how much volume per sub)? Ported or sealed? If ported, you may need to change a lot more than the subs to get decent sound. If you can provide this info, I can offer you some alternatives.

Its basically 1 big sealed box with a wall in the middle making it 2 smaller ones. Ill get out a tape measure and figure out how much cubic feet per sub is there. I was thinking Solobarics, but I think I read they dont sound good in pairs. Thats why theyre called Solobarics. I could just be way off though.

Some good cheaper subs I have heard are Infinity, JL, and standard Kicker.

If it is a sealed box, check out www.stryke.com and look up the SB10. It'll be better than most subs costing 2 times it's cost.

Another option is the Titanic 1000 at www.partsexpress.com.

Or the Hi-Vi research W10 at www.partsexpress.com.

The rumor about the solobarics only working well by themselves isn't true. The name originated because of the design of the speaker. By putting a stronger motor and a very heavy cone on the speaker, they were able to simulate a isobaric design (two woofers coupled together sharing an enclosure) with only one speaker, hence the solobaric name. Other companies have followed suit. Any 10" that fits in less than a 1 cubic foot box uses the same principles. Basically, all of these woofers have low effeciency (inherent in the design) and require large amounts of power. That's why people all claim that solobarics are power hungry...they are!

I found a review of the Evo 10 not to long ago that said it was the best 10" on the market period. That's what I'm getting for my vert. Stick it in a single 1 cu/ft sealed box with about 250-300 watts and it'll hit almost 120db.

I would have to say get the Evo's, even though I haven't even heard them in person yet. Maybe it's all just hype, but everybody sure it talking great stuff about them and the Mass subs.
