I think most people use contact paper instead of spraypaint, and cut out the circles. you might be able to find colored contact paper, but why? with most colors it would clash w/ the rest of the car.

Hmmm... I think you've got it backwards: the only way I've seen it done successfully is with black laquer spray paint and contact paper. The contact paper is cut out in circles to mask the interior of the lense. You then spray and after the paint starts to dry you pull the "circles" and voila, 99 tail light mod. I saw someone use carbon fiber material. It looked pretty good.

Yeah a guy on the forum does it in CF sicker stuff. I would think the 'tint' the brake lights have would make most anything but black look like **** IMO. But then again if you had a VR and painted it body color it might look ok.

I guess It's done both ways, I don't know where you'd find carbon fiber spraypaint

I just got mine done.. I personally think anything but black will look like ***. oh yeah.. my car is VR too, and I think changing the exterior of the lights (ie painting them) would look like *** also.

That does look good, real clean. I found some reflective aluminum paint in the Eastwood catalogue that restorers use for light bezels. It's an acylic lacquer. I have no idea how it's going to look. I actually hate the bright chrome stuff you see on most new tail lights and I am hoping the smoked plastic cuts it down alot. I'm into subtlety. Let's just hope I'm not going to screw up a perfectly good pair of tailights! I'll post pictures when I get to it in a couple of weeks.
