Subwoofer question.

Ok i have a kenwood 140x2 amp and a infinity 10inch reference sub. when i turn the volume up more then half way the sub "pops" when the bass hits. and i have the bass all the way down on the deck. any ideas? I know its not gonna blow the sub because its a 1000w max. i need help.

Distortion such as the pop you descibe can be caused by quite a few things...

Like the wrong enclosure for the woofer
or too much gain on the amp circuit
or a bad woofer
or a shorted wire
or a mis-tuned EQ or headunit (if the headunit has a vairable sub control or output)...

and the most common one of all:
Not enough power

Its a common belief that speaker death is usually caused by too much power, but its not true. Most blown speakers are caused by too little power, as Icemark says. Without sufficient power, you crank it up and get clipping. That clipping is the absolute worst thing you can do to a speaker. It can be rated for a million watts, but if you run a 20W amp maxed out and distorting like mad, your speaker won't last very long.

How do you have the sub wired? Is your amp bridgable, and are you running it that way?

Also make sure that the speaker is not playing full range.

check your ground too. it could just be a crappy amp. my sub did the same thing till i got a better amp. but my ground was loose and tightning it helped alot
