Good full-range speakers will be fine for everyday listening... but if you want to bump to some rap ( I H8 rap myself ) or feel a kick-drum in your chest ( ) then you need subs. Your best bet if you want to keep weight down is eather 1 good 10 or 12, or a pair of 10's if you want to keep the "stereo" effect ( I really couldn't tell the difference, other than mono's louder ( ½ the Ohm load ) )

If you get GOOD subs, chances are that will weigh your car down by like 20~100 lbs, including amp...

I have 2 10's and they are worth the weight! and I don't listen to rap. music is on 100% of the time. car is floored 5% of the time. and the weight wont' make much difference. so the subs win. you don't notice how good they are till you have them for a month then turn them off for a couple days. after you turn them off the music sucks.

I have a small sub box in my 87 TII powered off of the OEM rear speaker amps... it gives a fairly decent bump (for only being 25 watts each) and the total weight is about 10-20 pounds.... Granted; its not the kind of set-up to win any contests, but the sound is a big improvement over a stock system, and my total cost was $40.00 (2, 8" subs +2 tweeters)

You need the good speakers and the subs! what good is bass if you can't hear the words? I have two 6x9s mounted in the lids of the storage bins, so that they are pretty much right behind your head, and 2 10s in a box facing the back in addition to the 6.5s in the towers and doors and the tweeters in the dash. The sound is perfect. And though the roar of a good exhaust is a beautiful thing, it can get old in a hurry so the extra thump will help maximize driver pleasure

Just put in 2 10's and take them out before you go to the track. Best of both worlds.
