Subs in rear divider
Subs in rear divider
Have seen a few of these setups.
How do they sound? A lot of rattling from the divider? I would imagine that with a hatch cover, the subs can use the rear as a ported box.
If not, how did you seal them up?
Pics welcome!

Edited for me not thinking...
I'd imagine that it would sound pretty crappy. Maybe you could design a baffle for it.
The rear hatch wouldn't be a "ported box" as there's no box and certainly no port. And to get the punch most would want, you'd need...hell...I don't know what you'd need.
You'd most likely only hear whatever the resonance freq. is and you certainly wouldn't get any real punch.

From the crutchfield website-"A free-air system consists of woofers mounted to a board attached to the rear deck or placed in the trunk against the rear seat. The trunk of the car acts as an enclosure which houses the subwoofer and isolates sound from the back of the speaker, solving the sound cancellation problem of subs without an enclosure.
Free-air systems save space and have flat frequency response. The woofer must be specifically designed for free-air use. The lack of a box makes them more convenient to install, but their power handling levels are usually much lower than their boxed counterparts"
I would say you'd be better off with a small sealed box for a single 10" sub, this will have a small foot print in the hatch area and you could remove the box if needed. (track days, shady area or long trips)
If you went "free air" you would risk damaging the sub from the front and back and it would be exposed for all to see.

My other concern w/ putting subs in the rear divider is it's gonna be facing you, so it would literally be right there, with it right behind your head
When I first got my 10" alpine type r sub, the box it came w/ was too large to fit in the trunk w/ the hatch cover down, so I had to put down the rear divider, and I wedged the box in that area (on top of/behind the bins, and in the area where the rear divider sits). So essentially it was sitting like it would, had it been mounted in the rear divider.
I'll tell you...in my short 20 min drive home, I got a headache. The sub was too close to my head for me, sending vibrations that did a # on me. Not fun. I had to get that changed quick.
So I dunno how much you'd enjoy having not one, but TWO subs right there behind your head, and facing your head at that.
Believe it or not, there's a WORLD of difference when the subs are in a box in the trunk, and the rear divider is in place: ya don't get headaches! haha

Godzilla-T78, while I still think that's liable to give ya a big a$$ headache, MAN... that looks sooo sweet. I like it a lot!
My only other critique would be my whole point of putting in subs is to get some serious deep crisp bass. If you're gonna leave it open-air and that's gonna compromise the power levels they can operate at, that makes it kinda counterproductive, ya know?
Show is great...but I try not to put show at the expense of go. Hopefully you can get both equally.

Got to love that search feature .... comments from me and others who are hobbiest and/or professionals.

i appreciate the effort to help but nowhere in that thread did anyone talk about subs in teh divider, just the bins.
Gozilla - any chance you can post a pic of the back of that divider?
BTW: how does it sound?
Steve
I'm sorry .... I guess I got confused. I was thinking rear bins the entire way!
That being said, I think the location is very similar to the bins and I think you would do much better to move the sub to the back part of the hatch area. Now if you are looking for a wow factor, the bins might have that, but a good deep note usually comes from the farthest point back in the a car with a hatch.
If you want, you could always make something out of fiberglass to mimic (spelling?) the rear divider and get it to fit really snug so there is no movement. That would eliminate any rattle if there is any.

. I had a similar idea. I will post pics as soon as I get mine done.
