stock looking boost gauge for FD

Hello All,

I have been kicking around the idea of putting a boost gauge in my FD. I really don't want to go all ricey and trashy, keeping it looking stock is ideal. I am planing on putting it in the steering mount which is 52mm. So if you know of any, that would be greatly appreciated.

Or can someone talk me out of a boost gauge? Do I really need one if I am not racing or modifying it, with occasional drives in the hills, and a few auto crosses a year.

TIA!

HLN

TY, I am feeling my n00b status, didn't find that in my search. I love the defi gauges, but needing a controller seems a bit much for my application.

You don't need a controller for Defi D series gauges.

I had the Defi D series in my previous FD....matches the stock gauge color very well.

Like SpeedKing mentioned, you do not need the controller.

Ok I am seriously feeling like a n00b today, I cant find a rx7 store that sells the defi d series gauges. I am hoping to buy the gauge and the pod at the same place. Do you guys know of any stores that have both?

They don't make the amber coloured d-gauges anymore. I think they've been replaced by the blue racer series. You can call around to see if anyone still has old stock. I got mine from www.istoreparts.com after they had been discontinued. You can also try emailing www.egauges.com to see if they have any left. Your best bet maybe ebay or the for sale section of the forum. Good luck!

The PFS boost gauge matches well.

Garrett turbo has a nice one that matches during the daytime. Nightime lighting is white instead of amber.

Couple of years ago you could pickup DEFI 'D' series boost and temp guages for ~ $100 -$120 each. They're a bit more pricey now, but I haven't seen any others that are the same quality and look quite as good for the price. Post up a WTB ad in the 3rd gen section, they're out there. And since you generally need them both, I'd really try to get both.

Why would I need to get another temp gauge? The stock one seems sufficient.

The stock FD temp guage isn't linear. It usually sets just below the 9:00 o'clock position, but if it ever goes any higher beyond that position, your motor probably has already overheated and damaged. Hence, it's pretty much worthless. There are two common options....linearize the stock gauge so that it gives some meaningful and progressive reading or the more common fix, replace it with an aftermarket gauge that you can monitor. Do a search in the 3rd gen section for more info.

I completely understand and feel the same way. That's one reason why I suggested the Defi gauges. They come as close to stock appearance as I've seen, were reasonably priced and of decent quality.
At any rate IMO those two gauges are needed, even for a relatively stock FD. Personally I like my set-up, with a PETTIT column mount gauge pod for the boost (right in line of sight of the tach where it should be, and a single 'A' pillar mount for the water temp guage. I can try to find a picture if your interested, but it's really not that cluttered and I don't think it looks boy-racer. And as an old guy, I'm kind of sensitive to that.

I was afraid coming into the rx7 world it was going to be a bunch of ricers, going for peak dyno hp. I am so happy with the car in stock for power an suspension wise. I am a young working professional (22) and I really do not want a ricey car, I am trying to have people ignore my age as most of my co-workers are in their mid thirties and up.

Anyways, I was going for the column mount for the boost gauge, since it is something I want to be able to monitor. So multiple questions. For the water temp gauge, is it mechanical? Would I be plumbing hot water into the cabin?? I got an email back from egauges, they do have the d series gauges, but they are 60mm, the steering mount is 50mm will it fit? Looking at other gauges, the greddy electric boost gauge looks cool, but I am not sure what the gauges at night, if they can be dimmed, etc.

If you have a pic of your setup that would be awesome!

Thanks for all of your help!

HLN

The Defi gauges are electronic, no plumbing into the cabin. Personally I prefer the 52 mm.

I sent an email to egauges to see if they have the 52mm. I will check other sources too. I like how your setup looks, even your stereo looks stock! I will see how the budget is looking after I get the 5th gear syncro fixed. But this would run <$300

If you were talking about my car, thanks. Figured it's pretty boring to most, but I like it. And it's a Nakamichi 400 head-unit. Sound is good. And like the gauges, it's simple and the amber back-lighting matches the rest of the dash pretty well.

Well it is pretty clean, and does what you need it to do. Now have to a water temp gauge, and the how to install it! I will post pics once I have it done.

If your car is still stock and you still have the Throttle Body coolant line, I recommend this. Easy, inexpensive, accurate readings and reversible. IIRC, post #36 has a list of what you need...~$5.

Thanks! I wish there was a faq for all of this, seems like it would be pretty popular. I am trying to find a how to for the A pillar gauge mount, since I am not at home I can't look at my car, so I am trying to figure what to do before I get home.

Thanks again!
