steering wheel hubs

Hey everyone,

So I'm looking into getting a new steering wheel for my FD and I wanted to ask about hubs. I want a short hub and quick release combo that keeps the steering wheel in the same spot as stock since I'm happy with where it is. I really need a smaller steering wheel though since my knees are constantly touching the stock one (I'm 6 foot).

So I was looking around and found some measurements.
the stock wheel is 4 1/4" deep
the worksbell quick release is 2.5" tall
Anyone know the worksbell short hub height?
the nrg short hub is 1 3/4" tall
nrg short quick release is 1 1/4" tall
nrg regular quick release are 3" tall

So just by this math if the nrg short hub and works bell QR are used that would be 4 1/4" and the nrg short hub and nrg regular QR would be 4 3/4".

What combos do people have and where does the wheel end up vs stock?

Also I am looking at steering wheels and know what styles I like, but I was wondering about size. I want to make sure that the wheel isn't so small that it obscures the gauge cluster, what size is perfect? It seems like 350mm is a good size, I found that the stock wheel is 380 so that will give me extra room. Is 330mm too small?

Here are some of the wheels I'm looking at
Nardi deep corn
nardi gara sport
nardi personal neo grinta
nardi red thropy personal My favorite
sparco champion

Another question, my airbag light is on currently, does anyone know which wire to snip on the gauge cluster wiring to stop that light from coming on? The light has been on since I bought it and is driving me nuts. I actually have the cluster out at the moment so it would be so easy to snip a wire.

So I found how to disable the airbag light. It's in the thread below and really easy. You just have to connect the red/yellow stripe wire to a good ground, the black wire is a ground so you don't necessarily have to use that. I just connected it to the body and it shut off YAY!!

So let me know what you guys think about the hub, QR and wheel combos. Also are all steering wheels the same pattern and can any hub work with any QR? Sorry I'm a noob at steering wheel stuff, this is my first attempt at it.

I just went through this. The worksbell short hub is 55 mm or approx. 2.1". I'm pretty sure the set up you're thinking of using is going to bring it out further than stock since I've read most people that want stock like position use a tall hub (75 mm) and a flat face wheel.

Its hard to get a measurement on the stock wheel, but my set up feels like its pretty close to stock. If your gauge hood is still installed, measure from the gauge hood to the edge of the wheel, I'll compare to mine and let you know how far off it is. I forgot to measure that before I replaced mine.

I went with a WB short hub (55 mm), teckniq snap off QR (28 mm), 10 mm spacer to fit wires, and a momo mod 80 350 mm wheel. Supposedly has a 37 mm offset, but doesn't seem like it since I can put it on the table and it rests on the steering wheel, not the inner hub part.

I'm 5' 8" or so, the wheel completely blocks the turn indicators and part of the top of the speedo/tach. Doesn't bug me, and wiper/turn signal stalks are still easy to reach. I wanted a 340 mm wheel, but the selection is horrible.

One note, I never confirmed it just read about it, but the NRG short hub doesn't retain the auto canceler for the turn signals. Also, some of the wheels you're looking at have a pretty large offset, you have to take that into account as well.

I have an easier time thinking in MM, if you want the inch measurement just divide by 25.4.

That Teckniq snap off is very interesting, I like that it is so compact. How do you like it?

So your setup is 93mm tall or 3.7" total height which with a small dish wheel seems about right. The only thing I don't like is that the wheel blocks part of the gauges and I'm taller than you so it will be worse for me I would think. I really hate mazda for not having an adjustable steering column in this car. Looks like the works bell short hub and QR would be too long at 4.6" total not including the wheel.

So how does the offset work with steering wheels? Is it the same as rims where lower offset means it is farther out, or moving closer to you?

And my favorite wheel right now is the nardi trophy which is a 350mm with 52mm offset. So how does that compare to yours, and does the techniq bolt pattern fit the nardi bolt pattern? Nardi is 6 bolt.

That is the reason I went with the Snap off is b/c of the thickness. I really like the Snap off so far. No wobble, very quick to take on and off. This is my first QR though, but I have read of others liking them on this forum. Oh, and its Tekniq, no c, I misspelled it earlier.

I agree about the adjustable column part, but I got a smaller wheel so I can heel toe better. The wheel may block as much or less, really depends on your sitting position. My friends have noted I sit farther back than most people my height, but I am on the heavy side. A couple can barely reach the pedals after I drive, and they are my height lol.

The higher the offset on the steering wheels the closer it will bring it to you. I was thinking about the trophy as well, but didn't like the higher offset. So it would place it closer than my wheel currently, and like I said IDK about my wheel's offset. I'm pretty sure its flat, but different sites list it as having a 37 offset or it being flat.

If you use a full size QR its going to bring it closer to you, even with using a short hub. Keep in mind though, with the thin QR like the snap off, you will probably need to run a 10 mm spacer or so to clear the wires or horn button.

6 bolt is pretty standard for the bolt pattern, but momo/sparco and nardi/personal are different in the spacing. The tekniq uses a momo pattern for the hub, and it can bolt to both types for the wheel. The works bell short hub uses a momo pattern, so everything bolts together nicely.

If you get the tekniq, be sure to get the horn adapter plate as well, its seperate. They also only have the race version nowadays, I purchased mine straight from the company in Canada and he threw in the adapter plate.

Oh ok, thanks for all the help man. It sounds like the works bell short and tekniq is the way to go, I'm just worried about it blocking the gauges. I shouldn't have to keep the airbag wiring since I disabled the light, so I would just need room for the horn wiring. Thanks again.

No prob. Although since you don't need the the airbag resistor and such, you might want to check out the MOMO hubs. I think they are the same length as the WB short, you will need to double check, but they are much cheaper.

The NRG short QR might be good as well, I just liked the Tekniq design better and it was a little thinner.
