Sound insulation

I've no sound insulation in the rear of my rx7, it's got a few rattles (mainly the big apex'i n1 single rattling everything apart) I want to use dynamat or something similar throughout the back half of the car. I want to know what the lightest alternative is. I am planning on using some bitumen roofing material that is made to very similar spec as secondskinaudio.com material. Anyone have some exp with this stuff?

I am not sure abou that astuff, but let me ask you why youa re worried about it being the lightest stuff? No matter which you use, you will not be adding a bunch of weight....so performance-wise, none are really going to be better than the others...I mean speed-wise and not how the film performs btw...

dynamat it and get back to us. You're going to add maybe 5lbs to the car at most. You can lose 5lbs in a week if you exercise and diet properly.

Well, the reason i mention is because the bitumen stuff i picked up is HEAVY. REALLY heavy. I guess i'll break down and buy some dynamat. It's rediculously overpriced IMO....

Anyone have an idea on how many square feet it would take to cover the rear half of the car?

I was thinking about the brown bread stuff instead. Much cheaper, and just as good, at what it does.

NO!! QUIET COAT IS THE WAY TO GO!!

If you want the best soundproofing agent and don't want the weight, cost, or hassle of the other stuff, use Quiet Coat (now called Quiet Car).

Check out the above thread link for more info or visit their website at http://www.quietcoat.com/.

I'm finishing up the project soon and will post the results thereafter. Quiet Car is a liquid solution that is much easier to apply than the "mat" products and beats them all in sound insulation.

Thanks, I think im going to use something like this. Sucks though, cause I got my car undercoated, so I dont think I can apply it to the underbody. That wont stop me from covering the hood and every square inch inside though.

if your looking for economy, take a look at foam underlay for carpets...i did the interior of my pathfinder with it, only about 10$ a square yard. Im sure it's not nearly as good as dynamat but the price was right, and it did the job. oh yeah, it was pretty light too

OK, I don't own a 7, but I know my audio. Dynamat is WAY overpriced, plain and simple. There are other products, such as Brown Bread, Fat Mat, Raam Mat, and others that do the SAME thing, but at a lesser cost.

Let me start off by saying I am an SQ junky, it's what I do, and live for. What I did to my car was this:

When the interior was stripped, I used a rubberized undercoating spray to cover anything I could. I masked off anything important and only sprayed bare metal and whatnot. I gave everything a generous coat, especially the trunk. I used thin coats, and many of them. I used probably 14 cans on the trunk alone, applying in thin coats. This was smelly, but it also worked GREAT. Afterwards I used a no-name mat to cover the majority of the car. My car is quite silent right now. Most people aren't willing to do deadening to such lengths, but I am into SQ and it's basically a must. Rubberized undercoating, carpet padding, mat, etc, I have it all in there. My point in all this rambling is to look else where for solutions.

Carpet padding is cheap, and will help to solve rattles behind plastic panels. Rubberized undercoating is really great for the areas that nothing else will work into, as well as anywhere else. It gave me an initial layer of deadening, and still allowed mat to be applied. It's a REALLY cheap idea as well. A case of 12 cans will only run you 30 bucks or so, and it's worth EVERY cent.
