I did a search but didn't find much on it, not info for what I'm looking for anyway. I'd love to have the soft touch interior from the Spirit R, but we all know that's never gonna happen, so does anyone know of some kind of coating or something that can be put onto the stock pieces? Maybe a spray on coating or something? Has anyone ever heard of anything like that?

 

A few years ago someone had pics of their interior wrapped in either suede or ultrasuede. It looked very good. It's on my list for one of these days when I've run out of other things to do.

 

^I've been thinking about doing the other parts in suede or faux suede (probably faux cause it rains alot around here and I don't want the real suede to get messed up, plus faux is obviously cheaper, haha), but I'd like to do the plastic pieces in this soft touch stuff, or as a last resort paint it something JUST a bit ligther than black, but nothing outrageous. I'm not going to do suede on it too.

 

Just paint the plastics. They look reallly good when they're nicely painted and refinished.

 

^I'll probably end up doing that if I can't find a way to do the soft touch type. The little compartment door on the driver's door is cracked (like always) and I was hoping to reinforce that and put this coating on there, that way I wouldn't have to buy a new one for 1.2 million dollars from Mazda. But I guess I'll do what I have to. I have seen some painted interiors and thought they looked pretty good. I don't want them to contrast too much, I think it starts to look rice-ish (also depending on what color/shade is used), but I do like how the plastics look against the black interior when they're different.

 

if you do a little researching there was a guy who about two years or so ago said he used RC hobby paint to paint his interior gunmetal. that looked THE BEST i had ever seen. very nice. he provides links and stuff too. if you find it pm me the link im too lazy to look

I've found some rubber-type aerosol sprays, some for coating wire connections and such, but I don't want something that's REAL soft and rubbery that can just flake off. I wonder if rubber cement would work, haha, then just paint it. Here are some links to the aerosol stuff...

I'm looking at rubber cement too actually but I'm not sure if it might keep the smell and eventually have some effects on the human body or what. I would imagine the smell would go away after a while but who knows. It's been a while since I've even seen rubber cement so I'm not sure if it would provide the desired outcome anyway.

I would think that if you covered the doors and other plastics in vinyl it'd be pretty soft.

Yeah I remember that thread. I just want to go with something a little more subdued for the other panels, like suede. And I don't want it on the plastics except for the ones in the back. I have a couple pics of an FD with suede, I'd like to do something like that, except I don't want the silver panels, I want something like dark gray, and I'd do the whole dash in suede and headlinger too instead of just the center console.

RX72NR- looks nice, it's kinda crazy from far away, haha. I'd probably go with black if I did that, something that doesn't contrast quite as much. Although I do like that it does contrast, at least a little.

Apex- I never thought about using vinyl, but I'm stuck on suede, haha. And I'm not putting anything but paint on the plastics, except, like I said, for the rear. I agree though, vinyl would definitely make the plastics softer, but I think it would be kinda hard to shape it and attach it to the plastics. Actually I think a bigger problem would be reassembly of the interior with the extra material there, making sure everything pops into place. BTW, have you been out on the town yet? I still want to get stationed there again, haha.


Oh, and I posted about this in the Japan and Australia forums and they said the soft touch interior isn't much more than just some dark gray paint with silver flecks or something. So I'll probably just find the R/C paint my buddy told me about that flexes with the plastic (he said it's kinda soft too).

ALSA has some of the most creative and interesting finishes on the market. ... no I am not affiliated, but I have used them on numerous projects.

No worries ... glad to help. Yes ... ALSA does tend to lean towards jobbers and custom shops. I have used their chrome products on a number of my projects. I should have mentioned that I usually buy from these folks:
