thanx....and actually my shift lever IS kinda sloppy/loose...and now im thinking could be due to bad bushings...but on that mazdatrix page it still doesnt describe how the shift **** comes off, and hard to tell from picture...just says first step to get to bushings is taking off the shift ****...but how does it come off? atleast now i know it comes off...i even have a haynes manual, but doesnt say how shift **** comes off...

To get my shift **** off i had to use a pair of vice grips. All I did was clamp onto the small ring under the **** and twist it off. Good luck......
