Replacing FD rear speakers

Hey guys, need some help or suggestions with this one. One of the rear speakers in the FD (non-bose) went out, so I decided to change it and get some decent ones in there. I got some Eclipses, heard lots of good things about them. I have followed Max's Cooper's DIY (www.maxcooper.com/rx7) on the install. I've done every thing and got to the speaker. This is the problem I can't take it off, I unscrewed the four screws and can't take it out. I did a search and it was mentioned that the speakers are glued onto the bracket, seems like it is, b/c I can't figure out how to get them off the bracket...any suggestions as to taking them out w/o doing any damage?

The stock speakers are in fact glued to the speaker bracket. Just pry em off with a screwdriver or whatever.

Be warned that you'll probably have to hack/modify the stock speaker bracker to accomodate a standard aftermarket mounting pattern.

I went down the same route you're going, and eventually ditched the rear speakers all together and just installed some high quality component speakers up front and threw a Inifinity Basslink in the back. Sounds sooo much better.

I did the pry thing and installed some Polk Audio 6X8's. They went right in and sound great. Just had to straighten out 1 bracket with some pliers. Took about 10 minutes for both sides. Save the screws from the stock mount.

New speaker program:
1) Remove stock stero (if it works/exists at all, which was not a problem with my 912)
2) Drive for ~1 year with everyone bitching about the lack of music
3) Decide to reinstall stock stereo, only to remember that there was no stock stereo...
4) Buy Wal-Mart variety boom box with 12V adaptor
5) Plug in said boom box
6) Realize that said boom box is worse than no stero at all... now your friends turn it on and the music sounds terrible AND they complain... 2 noise sources
7) Buy reasonable stereo (say $100-$200) with a 12V adaptor, place in back seats (or on top of bins for the 7.
8) Use ample duct tape to prevent said stereo from hitting sides of car during hard cornering...

just my 2 cents...

Pop off the interior panel, take out the screws, carefully pry a little at a time around the speaker. Should pop out eventually. 6x8's fit right in

I ended up going with CDT HD-52 5.25 components up front. Picking out a set of components is a real challange. There's so many products out there and everyone has their own opinions as to which one is the best.

I've heard 6.5 inch speakers can fit but I wanted something that didnt require alot of extra work. (my first install)

But I'm serious, you wont believe the difference from the stock non-bose setup to a aftermarket one.

Pioneer Deck DEH3400 = $130
CDT HD-52 Components = $200
Infinity Basslink = $200
US Acoustics 2080 Amplifier - 80x2 @ 4ohm = $75

I'll try and get one....At first I was gonna just screw it directly down to the trunk area, but I wussed out of drilling holes in the car

I siliconed/liquid nails a 1/2 inch MDF section down to the trunk under the carpet and screwed the basslink to that.

I'm still concerned about the safety of this setup if I get into an accident.

type r's

hey bro infact those speakers are glued to the bracket. u know what tho, i ditched those brackets becuz they couldn't accomodate my alpine type r speakers, so i just used the speaker grilles of the car to mount the speaker(rite onto the grill). there isnt enough room for the brackets to support the huge magnets of the speakers. look into these speakers they soung gr8 and have better mid bass response.

keep the bracket and get a drill. do not reinstall 5x7 or 6x8 they are limited if you plan on using an amplifier later on. if your looking to spend around 100$ with no subwoofer, the those sizes will be good for you. if you can though, spend a bit and get some 6-1/2 components off ebay, they sell pretty cheap for good name brand quality. then get a marker. place the speaker in the bracket opening and mark the holes. then remove the speaker and drill a hole in the bracket. do not drill with speaker in the bracket because if the drill slips, you can damage the speakers. make sure you angle the speaker so all 4 holes have places for screws. depending on how wide the driver behind the speaker is, you may need to bend or cut a small piece of the bracket but this is unlikely.

You're not alone, my friend. I just can't bring myself to drilling holes in my baby!

If you dont have the Bose I would recomend it, it sounds good. I have the Bose and JL 10" with a Fosegate MP3. Anyway the Bose looks good and it sounds good, and it came factory equiped. You can change the speaker and the amp with no mod to the Bose caseing.
