i have a '91 vert and I want to replace the entire stereo system with all new stuff. But, I'm trying to figure out how with the headrest speakers, etc. Has anyone done this???

Also, what about adapters for the hole left in the dash by the huge frickin factory system?

Any help would be appreciated.

First off, ditch those crap headrest speakers. If you're replacing everything, then don't even worry about hooking them up ... they just sound like crap and screw up your imaging.

In any convertible the most important thing is power. To overcome wind noise you need LOTS of power. That means big amps, and speakers than can handle lots of power. I'm not going to reccomend brands or specific components unless you ask, but consider giving the front components 150 watts per channel, and your sub at least 300 watts.

Also in a convertible, there's not much room so you have to be creative. Keep it simple, just do a simple 2 channel setup ... only have a set of good components in front, and a single sub. Don't worry with rear fill. You'll need a sub that works well in small enclosures. And you need to consider your mounting options before buying your components.

As far as the in-dash goes, any mounting kit will blank off the extra DIN of space that's left after putting a normal size head in there. Practically any stereo shop will have one to sell you.

Use top quality wires, solder all connections, lots of sound deadening in the doors and wherever your sub is mounted, and plan everything before you start spending money.

I replaced my head unit in my 89 vert, and ran into the same problem with the huge hole. Take the mounting hardware off of the factory radio, and save it. The huge mute button box on the right, save it too, it will narrow the hole down to a normal din size. then get a single din conversion kit to fill in the rest of the hole. hope this helps..

 

Both the single din kits I've had were flimsy and didn't hold my head unit very securely. So I took the stock metal side mounting brackets and used them for my new head unit. Use a dremmel or something to grind of some tabs that will be in the way, and drill holes to line up with the new unit. I even reused the side screws from the original.

 

Oh, then I cut and painted a piece of plexiglass to fill in the hole.

 

yeah those freakin doors need sound deadening.
