Removing The Head Unit

I'm installing a new sound system in my 87' base and i can't find any obvious way to remove the head unit with the stock stereo, heating controls, etc. There must be some way to take off the trim around it and then take it out...can someone tell me how or link me to a similar thread? Thanks a lot

pull the trim around the shifter off, undo the screws at the base, then the trim pulls off from there. Then there are 4 screws holding a metal bracket inside.

This is how its done in my 86 gxl with an equilizer, probably will be a bit different if yours doesn't have an equilizer but here goes anyways..

Start by removing the trim around the shifter as stated by AustinCustoms. You'll probably have to remove your shifter ****, depending on your shifter boot, to get the whole piece off. Then undo the two screws holding down the outer trim (you'll notice them right when you take off the trim around the shifter). Don't try to take the trim off yet, you'll crack the top. Next remove the ashtray and behind that there is 4 screws. Undo the 2 screws that are much easier to get too (you will know what i mean when you get in there, i just cant remember if it's the top two or bottom two screws). Once those are out, the a/c ducts can be popped out and then you will see 2 more screws holding the top part of trim in place. Remove those and the trim should come off. Then there's 4 or 6 screws holdin the stock unit in place, remove those and you got access.

hope that helps, someone pls correct me if i mixed up a step, i haven't had to do this in a while.
