redoing my interior from tan to black and gunmetal grey

Well i've decided to do away with my tan carpet and tan seats. I want to jazz up my interior but keep a normal look, nothing too crazy. I've gone ahead and painted some interior pieces which you see in the pics. I still need to paint both door panels. I have a black carpet from another fd that will be installed soon. Along with the installation of the carpet I will be re-leathering my seats, either black or gunmetal grey to match the interior pieces. I'm leaning toward the gunmetal grey, I think gunmetal seats would look very cool. Anbody have any opinions or suggestions they would like to add?

I got this goofy idea that I was going to do some bright yellow on the interior of my VR recently, and if I was 16 I probably would have gone for it. Thank god I came to my senses.

I'm keeping the sides of the seats black,
the middle a very dark charcoal perforated grey leather, and the center console and maybe some panels in a smooth gunmetal grey leather. I am pretty sure I will use red stitching. I'm also going to do my shifter and E-brake boots in a "gathered" leather (instead of stitched) using the same perfed charcoal. The steering wheel is going to have new leather in a two tone scheme as well to match, probably gunmetal on the top and bottom with new perfed black leather on the "grips". I'm also going to wrap it in 1/8 in neoprene to make it thicker. I'm sticking with the stock steering wheel 'cause of the airbag and my very thin skull.

I think subtle is good, and your plan sounds really nice.
It's going to look great with your black exterior.
I've never tried to paint door panels, but if you can get them really clean I think it will work just fine.

Good luck and post some progress pix, I hope to start on mine in a month.

For a second I was about to hate you. the reflection of the parking space lines on your car make it look as if you have the factory side skirts. I want those so badly. anyways, nice clean car. I say go with black over gun metal. The oem look is always the safest.

Those look pretty good. I've been thinking about getting the new 99 front lip piece, the side skirts look like they would go good with the new lip. How much do they cost? And those are factory side skirts that are sold from mazda?

It only looked like that because all of the panels had been removed for the "wicked monkey"painting process.

Guys, the paint I am using to paint the interior is 'Dupli-Color Auto Spray', and can be found at wal-mart in the automotive section. Its just auto body paint, but the stuff works wonders on any surface and doesn't peel or scratch off, unless you are REALLY trying to get the stuff off. And once you spray it on a couple times, take some 1000 grit wet/dry and give it a quick sand, then polish with rubbing compound 1500 grit and you'll have one very nice finish. You could actually buy their clear coat and give it a glossier look too. I have also used this stuff along with the clear coat to do some repair to my front bumper. Worked great, polished right up and its been on there for about a year with no signs of failure, and hell no one even realizes its a custom $10 paint job.

I recently converted my 94 rx7 (black also) from tan interior to all black. I used the dupicolor to paint my door panels and dash, they were black already, but the semi gloss really made it look dark deep black.

I replaced my seat covers with leatherseats.com black seats. and I dyed my carpet black with the Dupli color spray you are talking about.

Rynberg from this forum saw my carpet in person when we dynoed and he said it looks factory. I have pics in the interior section if anyone wants to see it. Do a search on my screen name.

Your gunmetal gray looks good, I will keep mine solid black though.

As you see in my sig, I have the eibach springs with the yellow koni's set on their lowest perch setting as well as stiffest settings. Plus to go along with springs and shocks I have racing beat front and rear sway bars and cusco front and stock rear tower braces. I run kumho ecsta 700's (auto-x and road race) tires on there too, so she handles like a dream.

It says "gunmetal" on the can, and it has the lid color to match.

You know guys, this is a very simple and inexpensive way to liven up the interior. Anybody that has ever thought about having the center console and dash pieces painted or buying one of those overlay kits can easily do it themselves for about $5 and a few hours time.

Oh ok didn't know if it said "gumetal" on it or not.. hehehe...

I definately think it's a great idea to keep expenses down as you said and do something that not everyone else already has with your own personal touch. BTW, yours looks great. I'm definately digging the instrument cluster/center console peices..

That looks REALLY good, some of the other interior paint jobs that I've seen are too glossy looking, yours isn't, looks like a kind of metalic finish. Love the color too, gunmetal is one of my favs.

Yeah, I could have clearcoated and polished to give it a very glossy and smooth finish, but I decided to keep it looking like the stock finish.

I finished the drivers side door today, so hopefully i'll have some pics tomorrow.
