Hey guys, just picked myself up a new '95 FD that's completely bone stock, already tired of the audio system so I was wondering what people recommend for decent speakers.

How do you like them? I hear they are a bit harsh...I just bought a pair of no. 6's for my LP.

 

lol, I didn't pay much more for my whole FD! Focals are great speakers, but 4k is crazy.

JL makes high-quality audio for you car. A set of C5s are kinda expensive, but not lotto winner expensive like the Focals that those guys are pimpin'.

Remember, if your'e running the oem BOSE head unit, you're gonna need more than speakers.

 

I was being sarcastic. I can't afford those speakers for my car. I haven't even heard them, I have listened to the 6 ' s tho. Simply amazing.

The max mounting depth for your doors is 2 1/2 in. Congrats on the new-to-you FD!

 

You can squeeze a bit more if you dremel out the plastic on the mount that goes between the magnet and the door glass. If my attachment worked you can see 2.730" depth between the door glass rolled all the way down and the original beige plastic that sealed the mount to the door panel. I believe one could mount a mid-bass on top of the beige plastic piece and still have the speaker surround clear the factory grill.
I have Boston Rally 6.5" at this time. The FD speaker mount has not had it's plastic behind the speaker grill taken out. It is not using the Beige filler piece but does have a trim ring to space it out a bit. It's not sealed to the door panel. The Boston tweeter just barely makes contact with the factory speaker grill.
The Boston Rally Co-ax is weak in the mid-bass department, midrange and upper midrange are detailed, crisp and revealing. I have old man / machinist ears and cant hear highs but it does seem the Boston tweeters are balanced, metal dome but not harsh like a MB Quart.

 

Cool thanks, I've seen a few writeups on fitting bigger speakers and think I'll probably end up heading that way, I'm also probably going to fix a few rattles in the doors when I take the panels off, anybody have recommendations about this? Normal driving and bumps in the road make them rattle so I was thinking about sticking some sound deadening stuff to the problem areas

 

Yes actually. Those triangles above the panel that cover the door frame where the mirror mounts are SOOO easy to break. They have a round snap/plug that fits in a hole in the window frame. If there's any rust on it, it won't flex in right and the plastic breaks. Replacements are not easy to find and not cheap.
Use something like a 1 1/2" putty knife to get under it from the front of the window frame and aim it toward the center of the triangle where the round snap/plug is. You will be tempted to twist or lever it but instead, try to get a fork between the putty knife and window frame to use like a cam while the putty knife stays flat and has the most contact area with the plastic.
Same deal for the larger plastic piece that covers the window frame behind the outside door handle but this piece has two of the round snap/plugs. Your best bet on these is to roll the window down and come in from that side. They are positioned above and below so the putty knife should make contact with both at the same time. Gently smack your palm on the end of the handle and you might lift it enough to get finger nails under it on many sides.
You have to pull your door handle cup to get to a screw under there. There's a round filler piece covering it and on my FD this round plug is bent up where some PO pried it up like a ***-hat.
After that, the panel is hung from the top with normal push fasteners so start working loose from one of the bottom corners. There are several maintenance things you can do while your in there. Search for lubing your window frames, putting relays on your window switch, fixing the light and key cover on your outside door handle, maybe installing an actuator for keyless entry.

JK. It's rad to even SEE a set of those. I ran Focal PolyKevs/JL amps in my car for years. They were no Be's or even Utopias, but the highs weren't harsh to my ears. Bright was more the word.
Let us know how you like 'em! What do you plan on powering them with?

 

Still deciding, either Sinfoni, Brax, Mcintosh or Audison.

 

I have an expensive audio set up in my house and it sounds ridicules. I put C5 components in my FC and it rivals my home set up. I have cheap older JLs in my FD and they are good enough that I have not yet upgraded but I will. I never liked putting tweeters in stock door panels but since I put them in the FC, I would never go without them again.

Let me tell ya,the car never sounded so good!
Only drawback is weight as these things weight 12.5 pounds..a piece! (so 50 pounds across the rear of the car.)

 

After reading through this thread a while ago. After 10 Years of my old system I threw in some JL Audio C5-650's up front... and JL Audio TR-570-CXI in back and a 12" sub and a polk audio PA D5000.5 amp powering everything. Great sound all around. Need to tune it a little more. BUT OMG so clear!
