Cool Recommended Front speakers for 1st Gen.

I have been looking to replace the front 4" speaker in my 84 GSLSE and have been very disappointed in the speakers I've tried. So far I've tried Pioneer, Kenwood, and Polk Audio and when I hook one up and compare to the stock 17 year old speaker, The old speaker is at least 1 1/2 times more efficient. (I notice the magnet on the stock speaker is bigger then the other speakers I've tried) Any recommendations?

When I bought my GSLSE, it had polk speakers, but since one was busted i went Bestbuy and got me some Cerwing Vegas,
model vega 4002, and they are ok, the magent is a tad large so it sticks out a little bit, but with the kick panel you cant tell. Dont know if this affects the speaker, oh well.
The only thi that sucks is that since i bought speakers all around, vega 6002 for the back, the rear speakers kill the front ones. So its hard to tell if they are actually working or not.

I made the mistake of buying Polk Audio, I thought "for that much money they must be awesome". Horseshit, they suck.

I took 'em back and spent half the money on Boston Acoustics-Rally Series. Much better purchase. I got the seperate woofer and tweeter with the crossover. Perfect fit. I mounted the crossovers to the firewall. I mounted the tweets down by the woofer and angled them toward the listener. I've got 50W running to them and they sound good.

how much were the bostons because i've looked into those and they seem like they'd set you back way more than the polks...how much were the polks too?

My Boston Rally series 4" woofer and 1" tweet seperates with crossovers were $169. Boston does make a Pro series that go for over $300 for the 4" set. I forgot which Polk line I bought....I didn't have them long enough(about two hours). They were around $280 or something. They could handle a lot of power, but the RMS was 35 watts. I just wasn't happy with them...I hooked them up with 50 watts and then bridged my amp to get 100W to each and they still weren't that good. I didn't think so anyway. I bought these speakers almost 6 years ago, so keep that in mind. I'm sure technology has gotten better, and prices have also gotten higher.

I'm putting 4" MBQuart coaxials in my 2nd gen - don't know if you would have to get a new amp or not.

I'll let you know how they sound in a couple weeks!
