radio removel/install questions for 2nd gen RX-7
Hi, I am new here and I need help. I just acquired a 1990 Mazda RX-7 GXL and I need to know what the wiring schematics are for the stock radio that is in it. I have a Sony MD deck that I want to put in but at first sight I see that the stero in the RX-7 is going to leave a pretty big space after I put the MD player in. I am relatively new to the RX-7 scene (this is my very first one) and would welcome any advice/solutions. Thanks!

You will need a kit. The best kit I have found is the Crutchfield kit. It is 2nd gen specific, unlike most of the "one kit fits all Mazda" kits.
Also, I would recommend a harness too, unless your car's stereo wiring has already been "molested".
If so, email me direct, and I can scan the info for you.
By the way, I have had 2 MD units in my RX7's over the past few years...a Sony MDX-C670, and an MDX-C5970.
Attached is a picture of the MDX-C670 in a Crutchfield kit (for 86-91 RX7).
Please email me direct if you have any specific MD or RX7 stereo installation questions. I have had several RX7s (since 1995), as well as no less than 7 MD car decks, that I have bought, sold, or installed in the past 5 years. I should be able to help.

To take off center dash console, take out ashtray, unscrew 2 screws in the back.
Then there are 2 screws behind the vents up top. they are angled 30-45 degrees. Take the vents out so you can get to the screws. a flathead screwdriver will pop them out easily. From there, it's cakewalk.
Careful to not break anything. Mazda made our plasic stuff reallll brittle. THANKS MAZDA!!!!

what are you going to do with the old radio
Hi Paddy,
i have a '86 GXL that i keep in original condition. The cassette on my original system is going quirky and i'm looking for a replacement. Is yours in A-1 shape? If so i would be interested in it.
And Re is soooo right that plastic beauty rim is very easy to crack. Approach it gingerly.
