Unhappy radio power surge

I've been dealing with this problem for awhile now....

After I installed my pioneer 9200 head unit into my base FD, i could tell that my rear speakers were about to go. They were crackling and breaking up when i turned up the volume, so I'd assume that replacing them should fix that issue.

A bigger problem is that sometimes when there's a lot of bass, the head unit will just completely shut off and come right back on. Kinda like a power surge.....I'm wondering if that's what it is? Does this mean I need an amp or something? Could it be that the stock power wire to the radio isn't sufficient for the pioneer unit?

Thanks for any ideas!!

Thats weird because my kenwood head unit does that too..

You might be trying to draw too much power from the head unit, but I get the same thing, and I assumed thats what it was, kindof a saftey feature.

But I dunno.

yeah i was thinking that too.....maybe the bad speakers are drawing all the power away from the head unit.

So maybe just replacing the speakers would fix the problem? That would be sweet if it was that simple...

not glad to see that you have the same problem, but good to know that it's not a Pioneer thing.

oh yeah....another thing too.

occasionally when i turn the key on to power up the windows, but not to start the car.....the radio will go on-off-on-off-on-off like it can't get enough power to start up. This is intermittent as well.

My battery is only a year old, so I don't think that's it.

what else could it be?

i ran my pioneer 9200r off of a bench powersupply once... just to test it with another headunit to make sure everything worked right....

but i had a similar thing happen, only when trying to play a cd though, it would repeatedly start up, try and spin up the cd and then shut off... and this would repeat

it never did that when it was in the first car it was in (volvo) and it isnt doing it now in my fc... so i would assume that it was the low amount of current the bench supply i was using could provide (4 amp max or something pathetic like that)

anyway, it sounds like it is definatly some sort of power or ground issue... you might want to think about reruning the constant power line to the head unit from some stronger source... (since its not switched it could go straight from the battery... but that would prolly be a PITA), and also consider running a better ground wire for it.

a multi meter on the wires in situations where it starts power cycling would prolly lend a lil insight into what is going on... but i have defiantely experienced that kind of problem when the radio isnt getting enough power

and definately make sure whatever wires you run they are at least the same gauge as the wires going into the head unit (bigger would be better), and that should solve some of your problems...

it may even help with the distortion at higher volumes (since most headunit amps dont have wonderful step up power supplies, they might start clipping at high draw due to the lack of input power... (don't quote me on that, but just an idea)
