Out of curiosity, can you have a piece polished then powdercoated clear to make it hassle-free?

I've been wondering the same thing. The final stages of the polishing uses a rouge that has some kind of protective qualities int to prvent oxidation and actually sheens water for a priod of time. I don't know if theres a way to keep the shine but remove that protective layer or if it would affect the powder coatings ability to adhere to the part. I may try small piece and see what happen as we have a powder coating place here. Jack

Jack, I have the stock y-pipe I can send over your way if you wanna play with it, just for the sake of making some progress in this. I've asked once or twice before about clearcoating polished items (UIM and rims), but apparently ppl said the clearcoat will peel, and I think it will take away from that mirror shine? Someone else suggested a clear powdercoat, and I've been giving that some thought. I think if that works, it would be an awesome way to keep everything all nice and shiny w/o having to spend hours on touch-up or rebuffing, etc.

EDIT: Whoops lol. I just checked, and that "someone" who suggested the clear powdercoat was you! Don't mind me...I'm a

Your more than welcome to send it. Once polished I'll find out how much to powder coat it and if all works out you can install it on your car and wear test it. Jack
P.S. Let me know and I'll send my address (if you don't already have it.) :-)

Jack, I'm not putting that crap back in my car lol. I have Efini pipes haha. I was offering in case you don't have some piping laying around to experiment w/. I think I have a spare Greddy elbow, so I can send that your way, it's already polished, so you can just buff it, powdercoat it, and I'll swap it w/ the one on my car now (so no down time for the FD), and we'll see how it holds up. Sound good?

Oh, and no I don't have your address LOL. I'm not a stalker!

Kool,
BTW have you looked into the clear powder coating thing ? ? ? for the parts once done ? ? ? I was also worried about it yellowing in the engine bay heat. I'm still going to see what I can find out. Jack

Bump again for some sweet work.

I have to agree with you here. My car is an outside car at the moment and here in Fla. with all the rain we've had if I don't get the cover off and let it air out I get moisture build up under the hood and spots will form on the stuff (major pain) I'm guessing most people that want the stuff polished garage there car and will be showing their cars. The protective film left in the final polishing does a pretty decent job for awhile (6mo to a year depending on how harsh the enviroment) left out side, driven in the rain, but does need some ocasional help time to time from say Mothers Aluminum polish. AMP....what do you use on your items to touch them up and help protect them. ? ? ?
