oh btw, i love the lights!!! they have a really sharp cutoff as Jeff said they would! im in the process of figuring out where to mount the ballast!

I was under the impression that it worked like this as well. I had opened up one of the motors over the summer when I was planning to do a similar headlight upgrade. The only thing I couldn't get around was how to make the lights go down from their mid-height position. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it appeared that the conducting disc traveled in a complete circle (half on the up-path and half down) with three conducting tracks: one common (the middle track), one for opening the headlights, and one for closing the headlights. There were gaps in the conducting material on the disc on the outside and inside tracks to break the circuit and shut the motors off at the correct positions (peak height and closed). When you open the headlights, the circuit will be completed between the common track and the outside/inside track (I didn't get as far as testing which track controlled the up and down movement). The motor will run until the gap in the conductive material is reached. When you want to close the headlights, a circuit is completed between the common and other inside/outside track and the headlight motor runs until it reaches a gap in that conductive material. This point is 360deg from the original closed position and the cycle is ready to be repeated the next time you want to open the headlights. If this is the case, breaking the circuit earlier means that the headlights will stop at a certain point on their up-path, but when you retract them, they will continue on their upward path (it will now be running on the "close headlight" circuit of the disc, but the arm that is connected to the disc and physically raises and lowers the headlight will still be in the "open" movement) until they peak at the normal height, then continue down to the closed position. I have been thinking about alternative solutions, but haven't been able to pursue them lately with school and work (that and I realized I don't currently have the money to do the project anyway). I would definitely like to know if anyone has any other ideas, or if I'm thinking about it all wrong. |

If this helps at all...when you go to turn the headlights off, they go up first all of the way to normal position and then close.

Actually, I'm definitely crazy enough to do 130 and even 140 at night. Only reason: the area I live in was recognized as having the 2nd worst traffic in the US... second only to California (I think LA?). The traffic in the DC Metropolitan area is simply horrendous. So there really isn't ever room to make high speed runs w/ all the cars on the road...until late at night when it's all cleared up. 4 lane highway, wide lanes, open, very well maintained roads...and not a soul. Who can resist?? :D EDIT: Let me clarify that I was referring to NoVa when I mentioned the well maintained roads lol...as DC has more potholes than asphalt in some areas :mad: |
