Pics of my "Sleepy" headlight conversion
I finally got around to taking pics of Wael's headlight kit installed on my car.
The Hella HID's are very nice and surprisingly have a great wide beam and a VERY sharp cutoff. This surprised me because it is technically a foglight. These lights go for around $600+, so they are not cheap. The high beams are just a PIAA foglight. I wired them up so when they are activated, the HID low beams stay on as well. The way Wael had them installed, the PIAA's are only connected via one bolt. I am going to take them out soon and fab up a bracket to hold both sides. Being I live in So Cal I hardly ever need to use my high beams, so I am not very concerned even if they had them. I am not sure on the price but I assume they are around $200. Wael used the bracket for the Hella lights that it came with. It is just mounted at the bottom of the stock cradle and he had to cut a little on both sides of the cradle to allow enough room for the lights side by side. Also, he cut the top of the cradle to allow for easy adjustment. I mounted the boxes for the Hellas on the metal piece that is right on top of the oil coolers. I am still tinkering with the adjustment of my low beams but I am pretty much done with it. I will post some pics of the beam pattern when I get a chance to take pics with no ambient light around. Its hard to find that in So Cal. :D Here is 2 links for the Hella's http://www.hellausa.com/optilux/productpages/DEX.html http://www.rallylights.com/Optilux/optilux_DEX_HID.asp https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...postid=2805888 *edit* I forgot to mention the motor. I did not get a chance to open it up and see how Wael modified it. If I get a chance I will do this. Also... special thanks goes out to Fritz Flynn that sold the lights to me. Thanks man :D |

Or just the low beams? The reason I ask is because the high's have not been aimed yet and I need to fab up a better bracket for them before I can do so. I will take pics of the low beams when I can find a place with no ambient light. |

Well, Wael is the one that made it. He said it took him around a weekends time to finish it. Seems about right when looking at what he had to do.
Just for me to take out the old assemblies, put the new ones in, and wire them up took me around 3 hours or so. This is because I had to remove my intake and battery to get at the bolts on the side. |
Looks good!
|
Those look great in white!
|
That looks really good...crap...now i have to spend more money on my car :-D
|
Damn...you're car looks good. So how good do those lights light the road?
|
Do these have any bezels or trim around the lights yet? If so, how and what?
Do you have any progress pics of the install? Looks great, keep us posted. Regards, Frank |
There is no bezel. I don't think it needs one. If you look at the pictures, the opening is WAY smaller than the knightsports kit. The covers are parallel to the ground pretty much.
I figured no one wants pictures of me installing the kit. It was the same thing as putting stock headlamps in and out. Here are some pics that Wael provided ealier... http://www.maxcooper.com/rx7/gallery...mbly_front.jpg http://www.maxcooper.com/rx7/gallery...sembly_top.jpg http://www.maxcooper.com/rx7/gallery...talled_top.jpg http://www.maxcooper.com/rx7/gallery..._pattern_3.jpg http://www.maxcooper.com/rx7/gallery..._pattern_4.jpg |

They look incredible.
...and once again the decision between sleek or sleepy arises... |
It looks very simple to do. but how did you get the sleepy look? and what type lights did you used, I think I can do this also, got a friend thats very good with fiberglass so he can make a bezel for look purposed, but at the same time it can provide some cool air to the intake!
|
I personally would have a bezel made for them, but they look great! :)
|
looks great!

Pretty dope there Jeffy!

Where can I get them and for how much?

Here's a diagram for sleepy eyes conversion.
In french but it could still give you an idea. http://www.transportperez.com/frank/...y_diagrame.gif |

Originally posted by SpeedKing You can't get them anywhere. They were a one-off custom deal. Keep tabs on forum sponsor Rotary Extreme. They've got a low profile headlight kit in the works. |

Can someone translate?
Whats the thing on the right? |

My headlights retract to stock position when they are off. Unlike those "JDM" cheesy kits that the kids are running around with these days. The headlight motor needs to be altered in someway. It has nothing to do with the electrical components. |
Here's an ok picture of how far the KS kit goes up

Ohh..
Thats just the same as pulling the switch. I thought that was to make a thing to control how high the headlights go. |
Thanks for Making the traduction.. bunch of slackers, french is easy

Yea but.. I still don't get it.
What does the speaker-thing do. |

The main thing is having them drop to stock height when off. They do?
Maybe Wael will chime in here and let us know how he did it. It looks great and definatly has mass production potential. Raj |
Here is a quote from Wael about the motor..
The motor was easy to modify once we understood how it works. Actually, within an hour or goofing around we figured out how to modify the motor so it rises as high as we want. There is no mechanical modification of the arm or levers required, just an addition of some insulating material to the motors internals stops the current from conducting over the entire contact surface. Also IF there is any interest, I might be up to make a few of these kits on a case by case basis. We'll see how it develops. I just need to figure out the motor information and I am set to go.[ |

I'm definitely buying this when it's finished if the pattern looks as good as the Sleek kit!
The question is...When will it be finished? Anyone know anything further? |

Thanks for telling us what Wael said Fumanchu. That is very insightful, and seems easy enough to do once I take the motor apart. I was half afraid that you were going to keep the 'secret' to yourself, thanks for sharing.

I was half afraid that you were going to keep the 'secret' to yourself, thanks for sharing. Raj Wael sold his RX7 and I believe he is no longer interested in writing up the instructions on how he modified the lights. I will, however, speak to him and let him know about this thread. |
Thanks Mr. Stock!
I do believe I am mechanicaly inclined enough to take this task on myself, once all basic info is out here. Raj |
If anybody is interested in this kit, I might start making a few of them.
We'll see how it pans out. |
Interested...Let me know on prospective pricing.

Those are some GOOD LOOKIN LIGHTS!!!!
:) They look great on my favorite color rx-7, I love white rx-7's. I made these with the help of Tristate rx-7 member, John Demetre's help. Together we managed to figure out the modification to the lights. I honestly don't know how to make this into a kit because it will end up expensive as new retracting assemblies will be needed, so basically I have to source assemblies, modify them, mount the HID projectors and high beam, it quickly adds up...So there is the possibility of using used assemblies, but then how do you know the real condition of the used retracting assembly. Another possibility is someone will send their assembly in, but what if something goes wrong and the motor gets fried, or one of the teeth break...who is responsible, what if I recieve it and its already broken, it becomes a "no you sent it broken"...and the other end is making the point that "they worked fine when I pulled them out"... It can get messy as you can tell. I made the offer to help anyone make them themselves if they come by my shop in Connecticut, which is the safest thing. But perhaps there might be a better alternative, I am not sure...I am talking to the co-developer, but I honestly think its too risky for us to try and market it, expect the entire replacement setup to cost about $1500 for the kit, that also doesn't take into account making a mold for a bezel. Perhaps the price can be reduced if there is an exchange program, but as I mentioned above, the exchange carries risks. But then it takes so long to make it, what do I make on them? The $1500 price is just cost! Its just expensive, it's one of those things where it would be simpler for everyone to make it themself...I am still talking to John. cheers W |
Thanks for making an appearance on this thread.
I have been meaning to ask you this but where did you find the high beams?? I have looked everywhere at PIAA foglights but have not been able to locate the exact ones. Also, I simplified the wiring you had for the high beams so when they are activated, the low beams stay on as well. No need to run those relays you had going. PM me and I will let you know how I did it. Trust me, it's WAY easier. Also, did you find a fix for the vibrating headlight cradle. It seems I get about a centimeter of play when the headlights are up and on a bumpy road, the cutoff on the HID's bounces a lot. I had the same bouncy cradle on my FD cradles but with the crappy headlights you can't tell. I ran out of ideas on how to fix this...maybe you have some insight. |
