Paintless dent removal - paint adhesion problems?

A local body shop guy looked at the dings on my car and said he didn't believe in PDR because the paint loses its adhesion to the metal in the process.

BS or truth? Important or not?

My car may end up getting repainted in a year (done the right way - stripped to metal first), but I want to see how much I can do with the original paint.

Dave

I used to work at a Nissan dealership and we used PDR all of the time to take care of hail damage. It isn't worth ****. It will look good for awhile, but it will chip off or bubble. Anyway, if you are going for a complete paint job in a year, why not just save yourself some money and hold out until then? I don't know your car, but I am guessing that it will cost at least 250.

I had a few small dings in my car. Called a place called "Dent Pro". They came out and did a really nice job. The guy used metal rods inserted under the dings. He slowly worked out the dings until the finish was perfect. I am very picky. I was not able to find where the repair was done. No suction or adhesive was used. $75

I have had paintless dent removal done on 2 FD's, and 4 cars total. I have never had a problem with loss of "paint adhesion". Of course, if you have deep dents or creases in the metal, that is a different story. However, any good paintless dent removal guy will not touch a dent that has already cracked or debonded the paint. They will only work on shallow dents and dings.

Bottom line, there is nothing like factory paint. The dude at the body shop is looking to paint your car, thats all. I recommend trying the paintless dent removal. I think you will be pleased.

Jeff

BTW- I sent you a PM about a VIN check.

I had two fairly big dings removed. One from the door, and one from the right rear quarter. Two years ago. The car looks good. It was a cheap repair, and I am very happy with the results. I used Dent Wizzard.

If you stick your face an inch or two from the paint, you can see that it was repaired, but otherwise nobody can tell.

my best friend owns a paintless dent removal company and he has pulled many dents from my cars, including the fd. if they know what they're doing you have nothing to worry about as far as paint. sounds like your local body shop is giving you a line of bullshit so you'll spend more money with them.

I got one of those 29.95 dent pullers from TV ( ya I know.. was up way to late that night ) anyway it worked fine I have had no problems removing small dings myself.. I worked at a body shop in high school so I have little more experience then mos. But anyone should be able to do it.. You have to look at how deep the dent is if its a deep crease then maybe your paints going to blister. Most likely not if its don’t you should have it done in warm weather I would think (100+ f when I did it )

Tekno
Also removing a dent by knocking it out from behind has been around for over 80 years.. I know alot of oldtimers that would cover there body hammers with cloth so as not to damage the paint. This was done in the 60's
