Huh..... It looks like those guys got some really nice results. That might be an interesting project to attempt. If it doesn't hold up well, you could always repaint it for next to no $$$. But I'm sure that would get old fast if the durability isn't up to spec.

Also, how well could it possibly hold up on the bumper covers? I know you have to use flex additive when we did it in school.

This method is a total PIA. My recommendation is just spray the Rustoleum with a compressor and gun. You'll get much better results and it will only take up one day to do.

I'm doing this to my Datsun Roadster right now.

Definitely recommend a HVLP and compressor rather than a roller.

It can be done, but for the effort you put into wetsanding that **** (and it'll gum up your paper BAD) you may as well have spent a few hundred dollars and bought REAL urethane paint and never ever have to touch it again (unless it gets damaged )

The job will only be as good as whats under it (and how well the top coat stands up) so if you put all the time and effort into prepping the car and getting it straight I can't for the life of me imagine why you would waste your time ******* around with that stuff.

Even look at the nice dark blueish Datsun. Car has *mint* body work, he's polished the rustoleum out glass smooth and that **** still isn't "shiney"

But hey, whatever floats your boat and you'll learn alot about sanding

EDIT:

I've seen it done on many cars, and I've sprayed numerous customer "items" (ie. trailers) with everything from tremclad with some acryl. hardener tossed in, to rustoleum on an old 30's ford tub (rat rod) and the results are never very impressive in person. Sure, it works, its "painted" but its no less effort to do right then a real paint job. But typcially 98% of the rattle can population doesn't have the time or skill to prep the car right anyways so it turns out like ****. I swear that the guys who really do this just have nothign better to do or want to try it for themselves.

Some areas you can have any paint mixed up and pit into spray cans.
PPG Deltron and DCU2055 clear into a can come out.
When you have the clear mixed up and put into a can you need to use it within 35 minutes of buying them. There about $20 bux each mixed up and have about a pints worth in them.It takes aboue 6 pints for one nice coat of clear or 12 cant at 20 each. This is only for people who don't know how to use an air compressor and HVLP paint gun or just too lazy. I can get show quality results from this method on smaller things like motorcycle fairings. But doing it to a whole car is a PITA your finger gets tired.

I would just pay someone to do it right unless your trying to be cheap like 75% of rx7 owners here.

Also later on down the line if your using oil or enamel based paints.
You wil have a hell of a time putting acrylic urethane onto that crap.
Oil will fish eye and repel the paint away and enamel will wrinkle up on you because it absorbs the thinner.this will cost you more later on down the line to have it removed for a nice paint job.
So if you're planning on going spray can make sure your not going to get your car painted nicely. You can have a epoxy sealer put on top of the oil and enamel paints but having many coats of paint making the stuff thicker results in larger chips and less flexibility of the paint. Before I paint any car removing the clear and base coat to the stock primer atleast is mandatory. Then primer and sealer. then base coat and clear coat to get the best results. oh and wetsanding for the mirror like shine as shown below.

Like someone said the paint job is only as good as what's done underneath.

this was done inPPG NCP280 Etching primer onto metal.Bodywork then omni mx241 spray bondo.Wet sanded 3 times with 600 grit and guide coat inbetween each wetsanding. PPG Deltron Black Base 3 coats and Deltron DCU2055 clear 3 coats and 60 hours of polishing.

This is the hood "Mirror Finish"

Oh and Don't FUKin Use a ROLLER?!?!?!
unless you don't give a SH*T about your rx7

Here is a $220 bux Materials cost with nasons single stage black on a FC with body work.
I charged $1200 for this body work and replacing one of the front fenders.
The fender painted with spray paint and when i put a coat of primer onto it it wrinkled up and cracked on me!
I didn't charge him extra but just imagine if it was the whole car!

This is just to show you how cheap and decent a Single Stage paint job can be if done correctly.Nasons is actually on the lower spectrum of my prefered products to use. Sikkens-PPG-Glasirut-DuPont and all the other lines that come from those main companies like autocolor, nasons, omni ect.

Body work to the side. It was crushed in about 3"-4" took about 2.5 hours to hammer out and using a hook dent puller.

Then bondo work and some fine filler for the pinholes.

Black primer surfacer since the car will be getting a black paint job.
Whole car masked with the free papers

Finished after 2 day of drying and putting it all back together the next.

too many people have done the roller thing. its gay. it looks like ****. +1 if youve seen my pics, its single stage, my whole paint job was around maybe 500, not counting tools i already had like guns and compressor. and my own labor. cheap but quality is good, no excuse to be a loser and do this stuff, spraypaint included.
