painting my 7, how to strip the paint etc.

my white 1990 gxl is peeling really bad and getting a little rust xause of it, so i want to strip the whole car, remove the rust and primer it until i can paint it. the problem i have is i have never done this. could i just use a regular sander to remove the paint varying with different grits as needed. any help would be great. also does anyone know how many cans of primer i might need to do the whole car? can i strip the paint off the spoiler if it is foam. sorry if these are dumb questions but i have never had to do bodywork, i use to have money but now i do not.

You could pour brake fluid all over the car, that'd strip off the paint pretty good.

I was involved in a good discussion about bodywork, and repainting your FC called "Project: Paint the 7" (here: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...2&page=1&pp=15 ). You may want to read through that, and then see what questions you have... I do remember writing about the paint removal stage

You can post questions and stuff to that thread, as I follow that one pretty close..

Yeah also works for removing excess bodyparts too if you're not careful.

I vote for sandpaper, if you can't afford to hire a friend or something with a spray shop.

Yea if its peeling, you dont want to sand until after you remove the paint. The best stuff of course is paint stripper and alot of time. it comes in a sort of goopy form, so it sticks better. Use a brush and do parts of the car at a time. Try to do it outside, and when your done for the day, park it inside to keep it from the elements.
If you cant park it inside, strip a section with the stripper (gonna need alot of cans of that stuff) and then when its pretty much just bare metal, put primer on it to protect it.

This is a shitload of work man.. but if you just sand out the areas that are chipped, the other parts of the paint that are not removed will chip later on! so if your gonna do it, do it right.

actually thinking about this again, if you used a power sander instead of the stripper, like a handheld one, that would be good enoughe. Try and get it down to the metal, you cant get it like that everywhere, but get most of the metal exposed. This is a much better and cheaper way than stripper.

HCL wont strip the paint at all. It's mainly only reactive with organics and metal...meaning it will destroy any exposed metal in a matter of minutes.
