Here's how you do it....Or, How I did it:

1. Remove everything from your engine compartment. Keep everything organized. Put all the fasteners that go with each part into a labeled baggie so you know where they go. They make zip-lock bags now with white space you can write on with a sharpie. I had a pile of baggies when I was done labeled "harness brackets", "ABS pump", "brake master Cylinder", etc., etc. Or you can tape each fastener onto it's part, in it's place.

2. When the engine compartment is as empty as you can get it, go to the local auto paint supply place and buy a 5 gallon drum of paint thinner, a box of rubber gloves, paper towels, and 3M scuff pads. DO NOT GET THINNER ON YOUR HANDS; IT'S VERY BAD FOR YOU. Wet the scuff pads with thinner and use them to rub the factory paint off...this will take a bit of time and effort. You want to try not to go through the factory primer underneath, but in places that you do, spray any exposed metal with some self-etching primer from a spray can. After I got as much paint off as I could, and sprayed the places where I went through with primer, my car looked like this:

3. Buy a roll of aluminum foil and use that to mask your wiring harness and subframe and whatever else. Buy a big roll of paper and tape to mask off the windshield.

4. Buy some surface cleaner from the auto paint store (ask them for the stuff you use to clean surfaces that are about to be painted), and use that to wipe everything down. You are trying to remove oil and gunk that's still in the nooks and crannies becuase paint wont stick to gunk.

5. After it's cleaned, masked, and ready to go, spray your primer. Primer can be mixed in different colors and I chose white since I was painting my car white:

6. When the primer is dry, go find some cheap-*** black spray paint and use it to lightly dust everything. You can see how it makes everything kinda cloudy:

This dusting of black is your guide-coat. Because you are going to sand everything now with 400 grit. The guide coat lets you know what you have sanded and what you haven't. Only sand enough to remove the guide coat and then move on...You are roughing up the surface for your color coat.
Primered and guide coat removed:

7. Clean everything with your cleaner and spray the color down:

I chose to put clear over it but this is optional. Most cars don't come with clear in the engine bay from the factory.

Your car, being burnt, will pose some other challenges that I'm not familiar with. Maybe someone who has dealt with a burnt car can chime in.

that would be a BUTT LOAD of masking. can't just air it on. A lot of trim work to do...but I think it's possible. I'd like to see the way his turned out.

great write up antisuv, I wish I would have asked this question when I had the motor out of my red fd(which is most of time )
OK, this car has been in the weather for a little over a year now, it has some rusted things, burnt surfaces ect ect.., things you could imagin on burned car. How would I get the rusted/burnt surface off, would sand blasting be and option? Im also kind of trying to keep the cost to a minimum, I really dont know how much this car could cost to fix and I would hate to put to much money into it if I cant be succesful with it.
Tommorow im going to start cleaning the insides getting all the burnt plastic and stuff out, I might even take a few pic or too after cleaning and post them up. Hell, who knows , this might be my first race car.
