Hey guys i just got an estimate today for paintng my FD3S. Im going Candy Apple and The paint shop uses two-stage PPG paint that they want to charge me 2300 along for! My question is does anyone on the forum know if i can get some for a cheaper price? cause i know that there has got to be a cheaper price .

You mean they are quoting $2300 for materials or $2300 for the whole paint job? That's a bit high just for materials but is VERY, VERY low for a quality paint job. Hate to tell you, but a quality paint job at California prices is going to be over $4k...

You get what you pay for. To do it right everything comes off including bondo. $4000 is
where it starts.

The price seems to be about right.

paint

The 2300.00 is for paint along the body work is 884.00 and the dissasembly/re-assembly is another 45.00 totalling 3700.00. Also the paint being used is PPG two-stage candy apple red? Does the price still seem fair?

Angry Paint

Alright lets try this again the prices were wrong! The 2300.00 is for paint alone. The body work is 884.00 and the dissasembly/re-assembly is another 450.00 totalling 3700.00. Also the paint being used is PPG two-stage candy apple red? Does the price still seem fair? or am i getting ripped?

I would go to several different GOOD body shops to get quotes. $3700 is too low for a high quality job done in California. Here in the Bay Area, a good quality paint job is over $5k, and that's keeping the same color. Color changes cost more.

I would suggest you do a search in your area for reputable shops. Look for places that repair BMWs, Mercedes, etc., although prior shop experience with FDs is always a plus.

so because he is not getting charged more he is getting ripped off? ha ha ha, why don't you find out the reputation of the shop that you got the quote from, this way if it is good you would get a a good paint job and not get beat over the head like some of these other guys with there 5k paint jobs. and if its bad, moveon and find a reputable paint shop. just cause there not charging you the same price as someone down the street or in the area doesn't mean there bad.

No. In Cali, good shops charge a certain amount per hour for labor. If you multiply that by the number of hours it takes to do a GOOD job, you are going to come with a figure higher than $3700 (including materials). Services cost more here, plain and simple.

Of course I'm not saying that a $5k job is automatically better than a $3.7k job, that's why I told him to search in his area for reputable shops -- either through forums, word of mouth, and/or general clientele of the shop.
