paint job

so, i've been thinking about it... i have a montego blue 93 FD. i WAS just going to get it resprayed, a quick once over to touch up all the knicks and such, but... just out of curiousity, what would a full repaint in say, a nice deep, non-metallic blue run? ballpark

its not exactly easy to repaint a car a different color. it would definately be cheaper to go with montego blue again.

From what I've heard, a 'quick respray' might hide nicks, but detracts from the overal quality. So if you try to sell it that way the buyer will probably notice, and if you're keeping it in a couple years you'll have to pay more again to get it done right.

Just FYI

There is no such thing as a "quick respray", unless you are talking about some Maaco POS paint job. A quality paint job for the whole car will cost several thousand dollars, unless you have a "hook up".

Here in the Bay Area of Cali, a first-rate repaint is $7-10k. In your slightly cheaper area, I would expect more like $5-7k. A "good" quality paint job will likely be $1000-1500 less.

Anything cheaper than that is NOT a good paint job, I don't care what anyone tells you.

I did mine the same color but it would have been the same price to go with a new color. Every inch of paint including engine bay, door jams, and under the hatch was taken down all the way. It cost 6k including a mazdaspeed 15th anniversary kit being put on. That was the car's second paint job besides factory paint...first went from red to black but wasn't done as well as the latest. I didn't own the car then so I don't know what that one cost. Some of these prices being thrown out seem a bit high. I went to 7 of the best paint places around to check rates and none of them were anywhere near some of the numbers being talked about. I live in NY.

ok, you guys need to CALM THE F DOWN! good lord, relax. by quick respray i meant getting a high quality job done, but just to the outside, not a full tear down... and yes, i do have a "hook up" i understand that that alone could cost upwards of 6k i was just wondering how much more it would cost to get a tear down and new color.

Why don't you ask your "hook up" how much then.

Ditto. Not everyone has the eye for it, but I sure so. I can spot a "Macco" paint job a mile away...looks flat and thin as hell. That's wut $3000 will get you.

It's your FD...your pride and joy. Chances are, this will be the only time you'll paint it within the next 5 -10 years (if you do it right)...and that would mean right around the $7-10K mark.

As a fun experiment, go around to diff shops, get quotes, and actually watch what they do for their respective paint jobs...you'll see a world of difference between the $3k, $5, and $7K jobs...

Also, ask 'em what kind of color system they're gonna use on your car...tri-color is like the bare minimum I'd ever put on my car. But if you're a baller...or you care enough bout your FD, I'd go for the six-color paint system (i believe that's what it's called...anyone from a paint specialist shop feel free to chime in). Oh and notice I didn't say body shop aka in and out in under a week lol...cuz how long you let the primer cure does wonders to the final product
