One of our fellow FD owners added a flat black GTR to his stable.....
He does clear bra work and vinyl graphics. He does the clear bra's for Lamborghini of Dallas and other high end cars....as well as bread and butter work.
It was around 2.1k
and yes...I had the same idea too about doing it for the track season (still expensive for doing it on a season by season bases).
But what surprised me about this was that you can pick any vinyl color and any top layer finish you want.
My covering is two layers. The bottom black vinyl layer and the top clear "matte" layer. He has a machine that puts the two layers together. That way you have a thick "clear bra" like protection (though it isn't as thick as some clear bras).
After I said yes to the flat black he asked "what color"? I said color really?
So yes you can change the car color to whatever you want. In fact he said there are vinyls out that have a metallic look so you could get a blue metallic and flat/matte it. You can also get the clear layer as a clear to make it look polished or an in between, like satin....etc...
I was going to repaint the 7, but now I am really thinking about wraping it. I can leave the CF hood the way it is but wrap it in the color I want. Then remove it and not worry so much about resale since it wouldn't have ever been painted....
that image stuck in my mind and pushed me to doing this

its not a slushbox in the strict sense of the word. That is not fluid coupling.
It has a dual sequential gearbox...it's MUCH better than the SMG in my M3 (though I haven't tried the new DSG in the newest M3).
But about DSG and SMG's...some people love it and some hate the "flappy paddles".
I personally love it. I don't have to worry when I get stuck in stop and go traffic constantly feather the clutch and easing forward. Also makes it easy to drink without worrying about shifting. With the DSG in automatic mode it is SOOOO much smoother than my M3. It really is like an automatic in that regard.
Performance wise, its so easy to shift and rev match on downshifts (obviously).
The first gear seems to be the weak point of the car when drag launching it though.
To each his own. On the M3 forum it goes back and forth on manual or the D/SMG gear boxes.

He did an amazing job tucking the edges. If he had to, he would remove parts off the car to tuck. The biggest problem areas are continuous curved surfaces. So the rear wing and side mirrors. But even that it's pretty good.
I can only really see 2 areas where he "peeled" the vinyl and it didn't peel off sharply...kinda has that pulled strectch ripped look. That area is just on the satellite "hump" and on the passenger rear mirror (on the inside like you are sitting looking out the window). Otherwise all the seams are hidden and wrapped.
We have an ice storm here in Dallas...when the weather breaks I'll take some more pictures of the seams.

Peter,
also if you look at the rear circular taillights....I thought that was going to be the biggest problem for him....I don't know how he hid the seams so well but it really just looks like paint around a complex surface.

Don't get me wrong, its a real nice car. I have two PERSONAL friends that own them. Both have had transmission problems because they have usd the launch control function and both have been bent over by Nissan on the warranty. One of them is now considering selling it upon return and buying a ZR1 when they become available. What does that tell you?
I will give you that. The car's vinyl looks damn good, good enough that I thought it was paint too. keep that tranny in one piece. Good luck!
