no bumper supports... safe??

hey i did a search on this, but got all sorts of results and interesting info, except the answer to my question...

i know for a lot of the aftermarket bumpers, you have to remove the front bumper support completely (minus the 99 spec bumper, which I believe comes w/ it's own 99spec bumper support)

while im aware a front impact at anythin greater than 25 mph is pretty much gonna really do a number on ur FD -- w/ or w/o the front bumper support -- im still wondering just how safe is it to drive w/ an aftermarket fiberglass front bumper, and no bumper support at all?

isn't that pretty much leavin urself wide open to major damage, from even a small dumb mistake (like rear ending someone at 10 mph)? cuz the fiberglass bumper isn't gonna help any, and w/o the support, doesn't the front frame bar (i dunno wut u call it) take the blunt of the impact? most def. talkin frame damage, not to mention possibly losin ur radiator and SMIC if you have one...

thanx

Many of those bumpers (minus 99 OEM) are for offroad use, I believe.

but i take it im rite..it is pretty unsafe?
just how unsafe are we talkin about? is it serious (ie would u drive ur car around every day w/o a bumper support?)

In DC, no.

Honestly, you pretty much answered (or should have) your own question. Without the bumper support, your frame is the next target for any accident (no bumper you get will withstand anything substantial). Now wether it's worth it or not is a question you will have to answer yourself (also consider your insurance company, and what they will do if they found out, that in the event of an accident, your bumper support had been previously removed). For the extra peace of mind, I would prefer to have my front bumper support there (even though they are only made to support 5mph impacts), just as I would any other safety device on the FD. Granted if you were to colide with someone at 10mph, it wouldn't be that bad, but just expect the potential for damage to the frame of the car, should you not have the support.

With the addition of my FMIC, I could have taken off the bumper support, but chose to leave it there.

2) <<With the addition of my FMIC, I could have taken off the bumper support, but chose to leave it there>>

personally, i believe that's a no-brainer. i guess my issue is when u have an aftermarker bumper...and u have no choice. that's keepin things on the edge...

I'm right next door in MD, but you haven't seen me. My FD has been down for some fixes. It will be done soon enough though, so perhaps we will meet sometime.

Because of the cutting required, I know some people who have chosen to leave the re-bar off. If you have an aftermarket bumper though, and can't do anything about it...well...there is not much you can do, but drive safely.
