New to Car Audio

So I have my sights set on this massive 18" subwoofer. It's 800watts at 4ohms (or 8, but I don't think they make car amps that do the 8 ohms thing?)

Then I found a car amp that does 4 ohms and 800 watts... So is that all I need? Will I need a new alternator, since I drive an FB?

My sister's boyfriend knows how to set this stuff up, so I'm probably gonna have him do it. What about my other speakers, though? Will they have to be put onto the new amp, and will that cause conflicts?

I'm planning on putting the sub where my spare tire is, and then just putting the spare tire somewhere in the back. I figure no one wants to steal a spare tire... But an 18" sub is something else.

And I was gonna put the amp in one of the storage bins.

Does that sound like a good setup?

Thanks

Man 18" sub? I don't think anybody has been using that size since JJ Fad hit the charts with Supersonic. That thing will be huge and the box will probably take up your whole hatch area. I seriously doubt you will be able to fit a spare or a passenger in you car if you are going to build a box that will work correctly. If you are looking for some serious spl look for some of the new higher excursion subs out there. They will sound a lot better and probably be louder. If you need an amp to push some power JBL makes one that can put out 1200 watts at 1 ohm for about $250 on ebay. Image dynamics and Shiva are two names that come to mind for subs. There are many others but these are probably the 2 leaders for now. For an inexpensive alternative that isn't too expensive look for audiobahn. I'm sure audibleeffects can help you out here. He sells them and is a forum member. Give him a shout. If you are stuck on using this sub check out how old it is and make sure it is in good shape. I know a buddy of mine used an old 18" sub and the moment he cranked it up he tore the surround off. It was pretty much dry rotted. If you are really serious about it let me know the brand and model and any specs you have on it and I'll see how much air space you will need.

It's brand new from Carvin.

I dunno if I'm gonna even do this, I need to spend money on my engine first.

I have a 15" speaker from carvin in my Bass Guitar Amp. The box (including the amp, it's a combo) isn't really that big...

I too would doubt that the spare tire area would provide even half the air space that a 18 or even a 15 would require, but if you can post the Theile Smalls (the specs- FS,QT,VAS, and Xmax) on the woofer I could tell you for sure.

800 watt RMS or peak??? at peak that is 64 amps draw min, well past the abilities of a stock alt.

I think u'll find that a pair of 12's is plenty with the right amp and box setup. That's what's in my car.
