low volume static from speakers

i bought my 89 vert with the radio not working. when you turn it on all i get is a very hard to hear static like sound coming from the speakers, at any volume. ive got the headrest speakers, speakers in the doors and speakers at the dash and a factory cd/cassette/am/fm headunit. id love to keep the factory cd player intact cause i think that awesome they had one in 89! so anyone have any tips for me? im a mech at ford but interior and stereo are not my strong points ahahaha and neither is electrical.

first thing i would do is put in an aftermarket head unit to see if it works, then probably upgrade the speakers 89 is pretty dang outdated

ive heard that with an aftermarket stereo you will lose the ability to adjust the volume of each headrest speaker, is that true?
