LED exterior lighting ideas for FD

This post is about the FEED combo lights and a lighting alternative for the RE-A style sleek headlights.

First, if anyone has FEED combo lights I'm looking for some info. Specifically what size bulbs the big light and the smaller clear light use. I don't see the point in getting the HID light kit if I can get the halogen kit and swap the bulbs for LED. I asked Costas and he believes the big light uses H3, can anyone confirm this? If not, I'll go with this word, no big deal.

Now onto the headlights. I've always loved the RE-A sleek headlights but hated the idea of cutting the metal to make room for the lights. For years I've been wanting to use something different for lighting that doesn't take up so much space in depth but is still somewhat large diameter to fill the space in the bucket, and the only thing I can think of is LED lighting. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything that would work at the time, but times have changed. I saw a video on youtube where a guy made a floodlight/flashlight using LED chips, lenses, water cooled heat sinks, etc. This light used 8 LEDs and pumped out 72,000 lumens. WAY more than headlights need. The good thing about these lights are that they didn't take up too much space in depth.

After looking into lenses, specifically narrow beam, and just doing some basic research, it looks as though it's best to use a reflector housing and lens together to make sure there is no spillover and it's still directed down the road. My problem is I'm still very new to all this and don't know where to get parts other than a couple places I've found online, and even then I'm not sure what would be best. So I'm wondering if there are any LED gurus here that can point me in the right direction.

Toughest thing on the headlights is going to be the housing/lens, not the mechanicals. That's what's ultimately derailed every decent aftemarket sleek light project, from LaBreck forward.

Although, with CAD and 3D printing technology, somebody who knew what they were doing could pull it off now.

There really is no way unless you get a dedicated led projector. Putting led without any optics is pretty much the same idea as using a lightbar.

Yeah that's my main problem, knowing which lens and reflector to use with which LED chip.

Although I've pretty well decided to just get an RE-A kit with H11 bulbs and swap to LED bulbs. I don't like the idea of cutting out the stock metal, but chances are I'll stick with these headlights anyway so it really doesn't matter.

I already have buckets from an Evo-R kit and the original lights from an RE-A halogen kit but I figure RE-A most likely switched to the H11 reflectors for better cutoff, and this way I'll have a complete, quality kit instead of piecing one together.

I still haven't done anything regarding a sleek light kit, just research. I found some LED chips and a 3" reflector and projector lens combo, and I found a cooling fins and fan combo, and all of this together would probably be low profile enough to fit without cutting the metal. However, I would still have to do something regarding the cutoff.

I started looking at Hella lights, specifically the 90mm modules that use LEDs. The high beam is pretty shallow at just 3.5" deep, but the low beam is still around 5" if I remember right.

Then I came across JW Speaker and Dialight. Dialight's modules are 3.75" deep but I haven't found any info as far as light dispersement. JW Speakers are 3.5" deep and while the low beam is OK, the high beam is only compliant with DOT regulations (I'm assuming regarding distance, not cutoff) when used in conjuction with the low beam lights, because the dispersement for them was not that impressive.

So now I'm thinking the JW Speaker low beams and the Hella high beams might be a good combo. I believe they both use solid state LEDs (I know the JWs do, not sure about Hella but I'm guessing they do) and supposedly they last 15-20k hours. Unfortunately I believe if they go out, you can't just change a bulb, although I'm going to look into what it would take to change the chip or whatever they use. The cost for the JW low beams is around $190 each, and the Hella high beams are $265 each. So the cost is still up there for doing this modification, but it might not be as bad as other options with the tradeoff of not having to cut as much metal. I've pretty much resigned to the fact that I'll have to do some cutting. I'll probably get a JW high beam as well to at least test it out. I'd like to keep all the same brand, but I don't mind mixing and matching if I have to.

For anyone wondering, the lights that the FEED combo lights use are (confirmed) H3 for the fog light, and 1156 (technically BAU15S) for the parking light and blinker. I'm still looking for a good LED replacement for the H3, the halogen bulb is already super bright with the only downside being it runs hot. The 1156 bulbs I'm using are from super bright leds.

I got white for the parking lights and amber for the blinkers. I tried white for the blinkers too but the amber bulb makes it even more deep and noticeable I think. The original bulb in the parking light was barely noticeable and the LED is much brighter.
