lambo style doors for fd?

I have many questions about the lamborghini style vertical opening doors in the attached gif. These are the RE Amemiya version shown on a blue 1997 FD.
Mainly, the look of them is not what I'm concerned about (as I intend to live behind the wheel and exit only to get food and perform other essential body functions) but rather their safety and functionality. Here in San Diego if a row of parking spaces say compact, there's undoubtedly one half-open space crowded by supersized SUV's ready to get dinged by my doors.
So far I found threads on the second generation forum and read on hoping for some insight, but those were drastically different doors. Some members claimed this type of door is unsafe in the event of a rollover as you can't swing them open to escape your firey death (a bit dramatic if you ask me). Rotary Xecret 7 responded to a recent email with a terse "we don't have these anymore."
If any of you have information or comments about where to get info that would be greatly appreciated.

Shaun

wow, good point on the part about not being able to open them in the event of a roll over, i never even considered this before.

most people do crawl out of their windows though but im not sure what happens when yoru roof does not support you and it starts collapsing (i saw this on option 117 where they roll a new skyline on purpose, trazan was driving and the roof started to crush in and the roll cage is the only thing that stopped it from totally crushing him). on the other hand, most of the FD's i have seen which have rolled seemed to have been able to withstand the weight of the car pretty good and have not buckeled under the stress

Except that you have to switch them prior to opening a different way. So no, there you don't go.

i have recently been able to actually see and try to get in and out of a fd with these doors and although they look cool, it sucks *** trying to shimmy your way in to there. the opening is not that wide and i think after about a week, id put them back to stock and sell the kit to someone else. if your going for show, i guess its ok but for pratically, it sucks ***! totally not worth it. i would suggest getting a couple bottle of nitrous, a turbo kit or a scoot hood over this mod

They are over exaggerating. A very high percentage of rollovers leave the body so badly damaged that the doors wont open anyways. Weather they open up or side says isn't going to make much differance if the frame is twisted.

Actually, the lambo kit they use allows the door to open regularly as well, so the roll-over thing won't be a problem.

EDIT: In any case, this kit would make the doors fly off easier. There is less to attach to the body.

I have never been a huge fan becuase the kits are expensive and not factory like the lambo. But what ever floats your boat.

I beg to differ. If you look at the hinges on these door kits, they're made of CNC machined heavy steel. 33 lbs. Very strong.

The stock hinges, on the other hand, are simply $40 pivots, and a door stopper, both of which are flimsy at best. They ripped right out on my passenger side door in a little mishap I had a while back...

I'm 6", 220 lbs, so a lil on the tall side, and def. not fat, but I got a wide/large frame. I have no problems getting in and out of the car w/ the doors open as wide as they go laterally, w/o opening them vertically on my car. Yes, it's uncomfortable as hell, cuz it requires gymnastics-typa motion lol... but it's very doable. My best friend (who's usually shotgun) is 6"2 and I can't say more than 180 lbs. He gets in and out like it ain't no thang lol

Oh, and this is w/ the VD kit on my car (not the VLS, which opens outward like OEM)

you might have a point where you say its a different kit (not sure of the one i was checking out.) the one i saw was definantly not comfortable to get in and out of though (im 5'7" at about 170 lbs just about)

wait, how does your door open up/out? can you take pics of how your door works or how it looks opened up??

Pics are on the last or second to last page.

I have no idea what kit you saw, but I'll tell you this: the VLS kit isn't out yet, and I believe it's only on Jay's car (who's in FL). The VD kit I have is only on my car and Noel's car (I'm in DC, Noel's in CA). I dunno if the decah carexcess kit for the FD ever came out...(but I do know Ian at carexcess basically ran out w/ money from several group buys, and the shop tools, computers, etc...it's crazy. see http://newcelica.org/forums/showthre...ight=Carexcess)
