JL 10" subs: w0 or w3

i dont want to win competions but i'd like to feel it hit. i'd be using a 600watt 4 channel bridgeable amp. what do i go with?

Are those the only subs you're considering? LOTS of other good ones too:

Adire, Resonant Engineering, Elemental, Image Dynamics
Kicker, MMATS, etc. If you like JL, there's also the W7.

You'll feel the hit with a 10" sub, but with 600W on tap, go 12".

I personally would go with the w3, it's the better of the two. But then again it also depends on the size of the box you're going to build. Double check box volume requirements before you decide.

for a sealed box i think the ranges for both are .60 - .90 cubic ft. do i want more or less box volume? i listen to mostly rock, and i've heard the 10s respond quicker than 12s. will one 10 be enough? the tweeter guy recommended jls, my buddy(electronics guru) said kicker. i intend on using a angled box to get reflexion off the hatch glass. the more input the better guys!

the 10w3 is a air hog. you will need 1.6 ft^3 for the best response. I don't know why but JL lists a lower air volume than optimum, but .90 ft^3 will give you best over all sound. the box of .60 will not have a flat response. if you want a small box look at the Eclipse 87101.4 it will have the same response as the 10w3 in a .9 ft^3 but with only .4

if you have a space problem you have no other choice but to go with a smaller driver,it depends on the motor structure wether or not a sub responds quicker then the other, but two of the same quality, brand but diferrent size speaker will respond the same, your box will determine how well your driver performs.tell your guru buddy i'll put my jl up against his kicker any day. if he recomended you kicker subs for a compact enclosure he's not much of a guru because kicker sounds like crap i know i install them everyday.and reflection is good because it allows bass to travel futher which is a plus.

I have a JL 12W0 in my FD and it sounds decent enough. It's not a competition winner or anything, but it adds good enough bass for ya. Good sound quality as well.

what's bs about it?
i did the math. and i did not say it will not be loud. what i said was optimum would be 1.6 ft^3. this is true. and also said that .9ft^3 would sound over all the best. also true as it would have the closest to flat responce the the "recomended" size range.
just trying to under stand, what is not right?

Edit: redoing the math i still end up with 1.4 ft^3, smaller than my origanal post but still larger than JL's listing
the dule 4ohm
(.71/.452)^2 -1= 1.46ft^3

that guys that likes the kickers runs 4 10's in a free air system...im brigeing the amp so i can run the sub off channel 3/4. later on i might use channel 1 and 2 for something but i'm happy with the headunits output for the speakers.

I'm old and out of touch with this stereo stuff.. But 10 years ago.. i was really into it.. I blew about 5 sets of subs.. in 96, I bought a set of JL 10w6's.. and I still have them.. still hits hard.. I am now transfering my 8 year old sub to my 7.. hope it lasts another 8 years.. if not, I'm still getting another set of JL's..

Why is a W7 out of the question? He did not make mention of that not being an option, so why are you? As for the 4-channel amp, so what? Does it make a difference whether 600W comes from a 4-channel or 2-channel amp?

actually it does matter whether or not you use a 4 channel vs. a 2 channel because you have to look at the ohm loads of your end result, a 2 channel (Low pass filtered amp) with 600watts bridged into one channel and the sub wired in parallel you will get a 3 ohm response(not to mention a good sound) but with a 4 channel (commonly there isn't a low-pass-filter) you will get a stereo signal after you wire all the channels down into one and wire the sub together....you will get a 3 ohm load on the sub, but the sub will be all over the place in the hertz spectrum...my experience is with stereos and JL wo's,w3's, and w6's, i've had them all and now have two 15"W6's in a ported enclosure. A JL w3 will be ok and put out all the power you need just make sure that you know what ohm loads you are carrying starting from the power wire to amp then to the speaker wire and sub. Any question email me on your setup in wire and such i can give you all the details and specs of things other then the sub and amp

I understand all this but the original poster was not specific about his setup or wiring other than having a "600watt 4 channel bridgeable amp". My point being, 600W from a 4-channel or 2-channel amp shouldn't matter assuming the final ohm load with the sub is proper with its configuration, e.g. 4 ohm/8 ohm, dual 2 ohm, etc.

i think you have made a good descison. ive had a set of 12w0's 10w0's 12w3's, and 10w3's. their is a huge diffrence in the sound quailty between the w0's and w3's. with an amp that has enough power to push w3's, it will sound much better. 1 w3 is better than 2 w0's. but i have 2 w7 12's in my other car... nothing compares w/ the 12w7's...
i love jl's and their quality is top notch. they will last you until you've grown out of your big sterio stage, or go deaf. im close to being deaf myself

Just thought I'd second that... ^^^^ I have had W0's and W3's. I had a w3 12, a w3 10 and 2 w0 twelves...the 10 and the 12 w3 were almost identical in sound...and the 2 w0's still didn't hit as hard as the w3. I'm selling them all to get a w6 which I just heard this weekend for the first time...the w6 is awesome and the w7 is mindboggling.

by they way yes it does make a difference. the w7 is a single 3ohm sub, most amps can't handle that in mono, over heating the amp will shorten the life or burn the thing right up. and not only that the 12w77 w rms rating is 750watts not 600 that clearly under driving the sub, and him having a 4 channel amp that means channel 3/4 would only give out 300 watts.( assuming that his amp is 600watts rms and not max power)you made it an option when you mention it. in that case an 8w7 would be more logical for his amp power.
