Isnt FD stereo opening 2 DIN?

I allways thought that the FD's stereo system consisted of 2 1 din units for a total opening of 2 DIN

However every site I look at when i look at double din stereos says that it wont fit in a FD

So is the FD total opening of a double din? Or is it a little smaller or something?

It's not a true double din but two single din on top of eachother. The reason is that there is a plastic crosspiece on the console panel face. You could easily cut that piece out and have a double din opening but you would never be able to refit anything else without buying a new console piece.

That's what I did on mine. I cut that out of the middle. You can buy new mounts for the stereo if you want to go back. Just go to a stereo shop.

The opening is much bigger than a double din opening. I had to have mine custom mounted by a stereo shop.

How much? I have no experience with double din but just figured 2 singles equalled one double That cross piece is maybe a 1/4" wide? Is that the difference?

Yes the difference is that it has the cross piece. I installed an Eclipse 7301 CD player in my FD and I had to cut that piece out. Little did I know that it would make the opening about 1/2 inch wider all the way around. Most Japenese imports are double-din and most Mazdas are too but the FD has an especially large opening.

The RX-7 has two single-din openings and will workwith two single-din units IF you use a plastic trim plate (usually included with CD players) around them. Most double-din units do not come with this and it makes it hard to mount them.

The other weird part about the FD is it doesn't have alot of mounting options for the stereo, stock or OEM.

Hopefully this helps out a little.

You know that's true. How the hell do you mount it if you have to cut the crosspiece out? You build your own brackets and bolt to the tunnel or something?

That's pretty much it. DIN is 2"x7" and Double DIN is 4"x7". The depths still vary from company to company.

The stereo shop made a custom mount out of wood and mounted my CD player to it. The damn thing skips like crazy now.

Works the same as most stereos. With the door open you see four small holes on the left and right. Insert some pieces of coat hanger into the holes to release the catches and then pull forward. The pocket will slip right out.
