Question installing '99 spec rear spoiler

If the answer to this question is obvious once I tear the plastic covering off my hatch, please just say so...

I've received my '99 spec rear spoiler and plan to install it on my '94 touring. My car has never had a spoiler on it so there are currently no mounting holes, etc.

Can anyone with one of these spoilers snap a few close up shots of the alignment side-2-side and top-down of the rear?

If there are already stubb's of holes for mounting that just need drilled out, I guess I don't need to worry about placement, etc, but just in case, I'm asking before I get too far into this project!

Also, if anyone has done this install (no spoiler -> spoiler) and can give me any hints/tips I'd be appreciative!

Thanks!

K

suprfast - if we don't get volunteers soon, I'll start going through the photo gallery and directly soliciting pics from peeps I know have 99spec rear spoilers...

where did you get your 99 spec wing. i see that you are giving a reward to anyone that finds you one for cheap. did this happen or do you know a place
i would like to know. i have a touring, no wing. i either want to go witht eh stocker or the 99 spec. stocker if its cheap enough, 99 spec if i cant find anyone selling one for cheap.

It's better to install the 99 spec spoiler on a car w/o a spoiler. I have to take my car to a body shop to fill in the holes that the 99 spec doesn't cover from my R1 spoiler.

Q's about alighment

Q's about alignment:

I test fit my '99spec last night.

1) The '99spec is about an inch narrow than the hatch, so there is about 1/2 inch on each side of the hatch that the wing doesn't cover, I assume that is tolerance and normal.

2) Should the bottom rear of the vertical sides of the spoiler line up with the rear edge of the hatch? Doing so, the horizontal fin portion of the spoiler and upper rear portion of the vertical sides extend beyond the back of the tail lights, but not beyond the rear of the back bumper, does this sound right?

If any of this is confusing I'll snap some pics.

Hey Kyle,

Use clear packing tape to temp attach it to the the rear deck in different positions, and stand back a good ways to see how you like it.

It's different ( a bit bigger), but I test fitted a TRD replica wing and it slants backwards too - and it looked better with the back flush with the tail lamp edge as opposed to hanging over it. But like I said, the TRD wing is BIG, so the 99 may look better 'hanging off' a bit

Make sure you have enought packing tape to keep it from falling off though, hehe.

Here is a pic of the pedestals right in the edge (the wing hangin off):

and another set further forward with the wing flush with the lamps - better looking IMHO. Maybe should have kept it, oh well. I've changed my mind so often on this car, its carzy.

BTW, here is how a friend of mine mounted his:

Thanks Daniel, I definately like it mounted NOT hanging over the rear. The black 7 looks tight where it is mounted...

Sweet, I'm excited!

I got the word today, the spoiler is painted and the shop says they feel good about the color match (silver is a bitch). Tomorrow I goto the shop to determine placement, will take photo's for the rest of you in various forward/rear locations.

As your pictures showed, the only location the wing actually lines up with the curves in the 7 body is with the rear of the base lined up with the rear of the hatch.

The rear most piece of the vertical sides slightly hangs over the rear of the tail lights.

looks great! pictures tomorrow!

Daniel,

BTW, those little black concentric hub rings (the plastic ones) were a bitch to get to fit...ended up using one of the metal ones to distribute the force of the hammer I used on a piece of wood to get them in there all the way.

The first one I did wasn't seated all the way and cracked about 100yrds down the street on my first test run. (mostly my fault because I didn't have a 22mm to 19mm or whatever adapter thingy to tighten the lugs properly and was hoping I could drive to the local performance shop and have them snugged up).

I did get to the shop eventually, then they GAVE me an adapter tool thingy...guess they like me, I've spend enough with them in the past 45 days...hehehe (and they know I'll be back!)

Ouch - damn, I should have just ordered you new metal rings. I hated those plastic ones myself. The green metal ones were an absolute pleasure in comparison.

The plastic ones were a pain to get on, then when you remove the wheel - they just pop off! The problem is the corrosion/rust that builds up on the hub. If not for that, the rings would just slip on. Sorry, the last metal one was lost with the last wheel.. Anyways, glad it worked out. Ltr!

I just ended up using the one plastic one and I KNOW it is on good now, so it isn't really a big deal, was just giving me fits for an hour or so when I was trying to get the wheels on and REALLY wanted to get out and drive around...

Actually, just got it in the mail. Had a question about the nut/bolts that came with it. I bought mine used (and the guy was nice enough to include all the original fixings it appears) but not sure how all the nuts/bolts are orientated? Did yours come with instructions by any chance? I'll take pics of the stuff I have tomorrow night.

There were no instructions and the shop that I used to paint/install it replaced all the bolts with stainless ones anyways, so I have all the originals if you are short anything.

I did take it apart and put it back together once a few weeks ago, so I can probably guide you through it over the phone!

I'll PM you my #.
