I'm picky: seat covers or local upholstery

I'm about a month or so out from wanting my stock FD seats recovered. they are out of a car that sat motionless in baking sun for at least a year before I bought the shell and what little was usable. So I've seen the leatherseats.com covers on ebay and as well on here. My take is that they look quality but still have a fair amount of wrinkles and loose material after installing. This bothers me. I also brought this up to an upholstery guy I've used on a few items and he said he could recover them for $800. I have not seen too many seats he has done unfortunately but has been in the business for years. I'm looking to go two-tone with black or graphite on the outside and factory tan look in the middle. Pretty much opposite of what I've seen on ebay.

So go with the upholstery guy? Or maybe I can get some opinions on people who have gotten true Katzkin kits instead of the leatherseats.com ones? I want snug fitting covers or look. I had Katzkins in my Galant years back but it was a less complicated seat. They did fit snug though how I liked and quality was top notch. I've seen custom work on here and its top notch. No shops like that exist where I am located. Pretty much 2 places to pick from and thats it. Feedback welcome. thanks

You say you've gone to him a few times already, how did the other stuff look? Ask him if he has some photos of other jobs he's done. I would be willing to spend that kind of money to have them done right. I've heard the covers from leatherseats.com are kinda loose.

He's wrapped two armrests and carpeted a speaker box for me and thats it. And that stuff turned out good. Asking for pics is probably the best I can do. but your right, if I can get them done for $800, then I'm in. the covers alone are around $650 from leatherseats.com.

If he's been doing this stuff for several years then I think he knows what he's doing. I say go for it.

Actually if you do a search on leatherseats.com .....there have been a few complaints with them stating they use real leather on the whole seat, where in fact its vinyl. I have never seen them but am just saying what i have read.

do your research.........

i read the same post yesterday with the tan pics. I must say they do look better than others I've seen, but still have wrinkles. Like I said...picky. I have yet to take my seats to the upholstery guy for a firm quote but he knows the car. I've talked about it. Also, My Galant had vinyl sides as was mentioned. Never bothered me any and matched good. I'm aware of the 100% vs not covers. I must say the color is quite nice for the tan. I would just have to decide on the graphite or black surround. Appreciate the links, I had read most.

I was looking for someone that has gotten the actual Katzkin cover to see how they fit as well. Seems leatherseats.com is a solid pick. The Katzkins are slightly more expensive from what I saw on autoskins.com. Would like to hear from someone in that regard.

http://www.autoseatskins.com/

this place has them as well but offer no pictures, only a stock photo as you make your selections. Just about the same price as the fore-mentioned company.

Also, I cannot access www.autoskins.com or anything like it. Katzkins website does not offer covers for the Rx7, though they do for several other Mazda including the Rx8. If you have found them somewhere, could you post a URL? Here is a link to the Katzkin selector and there is no Rx7 listed...

I have done seats a number of ways, though I have never used leatherseats.com. I do think they offer the best reasonably priced alternative. If you are really picky, you need to buy the leather hides separately and find a really good leather craftsman to upholster them. Its going to cost you $1500+ and will be closer to what you want. I spent more (MORE) than $3000 just for the leather for my seats.

Is it me, or do you have an unlimited amount of money? I always except donations btw

On another note, perhaps you should place a wtb in the for sale section. I am sure someone has a set of mint seats laying around and it would surely be cheaper then $800. IMO, having them wrapped in alcantra would be nice and different too.

I dont want single color seats. I know I could get some black leathers in decent to good shape but I know what I want to bring the tan and black together. To each his own. I'd rather save up for what I really want to see in there. nice leg work gmonsen. Keep me posted on whether they send you pics of the seats. thanks.

He was supposed to sell me a pair to! Gordon was to slow so I grabbed the RZs from you Bryan!

Gordon is definitely the FD seat king of this forum.

You can get a mint set of black leather seats for 600 - 800. Pristine condition FYI. I've only seen one pristine set on the forums though.
