boiling water and a hard toothbrush or scrubber... and keep on scrubbing... add some alcohol to slowly melt the gum more...

I clean carpets for a living.. when we come across gum in the carpet, we have little bottles of freon.. (availabe at carpet cleaning supply houses) yes the same freon you use in your fridge or ac.. 12 or 22.. I dont know about the new 134 stuff.. spraying it on the gum freezes it solid.. then you just hammer it and it busts into a million pieces.. leaving the carpet unharmed.. even in the gum is matted deep., it end up in particals. I would assume it would work with clothing and hair too...

the yellow liquid GooBGone works really well on clothes so it should work on your carpet. It is found at lots of stores including Auto parts stores and I think Wal-Mart.

^ 134a gas is the same gas you use with the computer sprays air can sprays so. when you spray close enough (1-3 inches) it actually freezes the part but it only works if you spray it for more than 5 seconds. i guess that would work too.

hold the computer spray air bottle upside down and barely pull the trigger and it will drip the liquid that freezes

You should be able to find specialty cleaners at the hardware store that will remove gum.
